This is a 3 piece I came up with during practice today with the Epiphone Acoustic.  I thought the track could be a big winner with a good crowd... It's fun and tells a story.  I can't say this is truly a cover nor truly an original so I am though going to give credit where the credit is due.  Not sure if anyone even knows who actually penned this... beside my side of this..

so epiphone hummingbird and vocal through the MXL mic (one track).  I found having the mic at vocal level or just above and voice a bit closer to the mic the guitar to vocal mix was acceptable enough.

Shecter bass DI

Tama Imperialstar drums

a bit of cowbell from Zoom

also I think the capo on the 2nd fret with this a progression is much better sounding than open tuning... maybe it is just different so it seems better?  Mama Love's Shortenin (They Made Me).mp3Mama Love's Shortenin (They Made Me)with JP on Dobro.mp3

I like your version Stephen. The single mic picked up the vocal and acoustic guitar good. The mic placement was the key and you unlocked it. Your vocal and guitar strumming are really good. I remember this song from way back when I was a youngster. Here's what I found on Wikipedia about its origin.

"Shortnin' Bread" (also spelled "Shortenin' Bread", "Short'nin' Bread", or "Sho'tnin' Bread") is an African-American folk song dating back at least to the 1890s.[1] James Whitcomb Riley published it as a poem in 1900, building on older lyrics. A "collected" version of the song was published by E. C. Perrow in 1915. It is song number 4209 in the Roud Folk Song Index.

Shortening bread refers to a bread made of corn meal and/or flour and lard shortening.

Oh yes, I love this tune... could you, dear Stephen, give me the lyrics?

I immediately wanted to jam with you on this tune, with my Dobro.

Here you go  a tune with Stephen
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

A groovy performance that never lets up. Also a great organic sounding mix. Those lyrics are a mouthful. I'm happy that it wasn't me singing it :D
