Lovely and intimate.

It's such an honest reaction to seeing a glimpse of empathy where you least expect it; a crack in the wall of fear-based self protection. The right response would be to patiently allow the empathy to seep through the crack, and see if it widens on its own without prying. But the gut response (my gut response) would probably be counterproductive:

Whoa! That almost looked like empathy, Tough Guy! Is that what I thought I saw?
