EDIT NOTE.... This is an edited Zoltan mix.  He added some synth and backing vocals which sound 😃.....

1983 festival a cover of Cory Hart's great, great song...

I love this song and I asked Zoltan to mix and produce it... and I think it sounds great... I didn't know my guitars could sound like this... (Les Paul and Shecter bass, Tama drums, Kawai keyboard)..

I am planning on doing this at open mic sometime too..

thanks a ton Zoltcola

Hey... But it is! Corey Harts first album First Offense was released in 1983 and it contains the song Sunglasses at Night. That song among others from the album was released as a single in 1984 to promote the album.

It was the 80's, it was the age of vinyl. Promotion didn't always work like it does today where the singles are pumped out before the release of the album. That is... If any album is even released at all.

To my knowledge there were changes to the album in 84-85 with some songs being added (Peruvian lady) and some territoral changes (in USA there was a longer version of Sunglasses at Night used), but this particular song was there in the first album release.

Don't think I've heard this song before but I enjoyed your version. I was surprised how different it sounds from your normal work by having Zoltan produce it...he's done a great job.
Shame about the fest rules.. I like the Year fests but you always have to watch out for the release date..songs that charted in early 1983 might have been released in late 1982, and songs that were released in late 1983 might only have charted in 1984. I picked one last night but it was first released in 1982, then re-released as a single and album track in 1983, so I don't know how that would fit ? Back to browsing the 1983 charts lol

This song was clearly released with the album in 1983.  Many internet sites including wikipedia makes this clear.  But because of my inability to connect correctly with the admin folks on the site who seem to just love to act like home owner association presidents and ride around on their golf carts to write citations to the citizens over seemingly very minor infractions I WILL NO LONGER BE PARTICIPATING IN ANY FESTIVALS!

It is what it is... I do very much appreciate all the folks who run this site do but their needs to be a little more discretion when it comes to deciding these rules about what does and does not stay on the festivals...

Yes, I am venting as this happens to me a fair amount... don't think I am going anywhere... I won't give anyone that pleasure... feel free to click your magic mouse and delete me if you want to...

I have made some great friends on this site, and that won't change no matter what...

now that I have that off my chest I wish the best to all!  Including the admin team....

Great cover of a "CanCon classic" Stephen! The production on this is really great, sweet heavy synth rock sound!

Also, I hate to beat around the bush here but I was looking around for songs to cover from 1983 and thought "Hey, there's some great Clash songs that year!" Although when I looked it up, the album was from 1982 and the single "Rock The Casbah" is from June '82 as well. Though, when I look at the banner, I see Joe Strummer up there! I don't want to make anyone angry because the admin team really do a great job running the site but I'm just saying, a song released as an album track from 1983 and released as a single later is more of an '83 song methinks...

Alrighty then! Time to comment on the song. First off it does look like the "disqualified from the fest" thing is just an editorial error than anything else. So hopefully that gets fixed in a timely manner.

With that out of the way let's get to the nitty-gritty.

The original mix Stephen did was already in a good shape. It managed to tell a story and sell the song. I just felt i might be able to do bad things with the mix :)

The playing is great on this one. That bassline. Damn... If that isn't worthy of the Thunderfingers moniker the nothing is! It's seriosly grooving and rocking. It's one of the most important elements of the song. Then there are the drums. This time Stephen is seriously holding his forth, sitting on the (drum) throne and playing with intent.

I think one of the areas where the original mix would have felt a bit weak would have been this. I mean it sounded ok, but when the drums are highlighted even more it's easy to hear that there's intent behind every drum hit. Banging on them bongos (as Dire Straits might say!) has really done him good.

The original is a synth song and this is more of an 80s meets guys from The Who among others. The guitars are also positively wailing. They're not always pushed to the front, but that guy playing the lead never lets up. That guitar is burning from the intro and keeps on burning until to the very end... Perhaps call a firebrigade on this? :)

The vocs are also spirited and could have been mixed better, but the current version is what it is. A quick "second opinion mix" of the spirited and super energic source material. Lots of fun to be had!

Oh, almost forgot. The synth track was also fabulous. It isn't shown in all its glory in this version, but in other hands it might have turned into the main hook of the song.
