Clock made of Bones

blew into town
like a leaf on a zephyr
the faces all seemed skeletal
optimism gone
the bank robbed and empty
at the red light intersection
with a gawking throng

I remember all the signs
the roadside attractions for tiny minds

when we're counting the time on this clock made of bones
riding the miles of life on these hard roads
we're swallowing the line
getting lost and car sick as we move along

a production line of Model T's and all of them are black
the jobs all seemed to leave this town and they're not coming back
an oil barrel burning
with the men all stood and staring
at the orange sparks

I remember all the signs
the roadside attractions for tiny minds

when we're counting the time on this clock made of bones
riding the miles of life on these hard roads
we're swallowing the line
getting lost and car sick as we move along

some things never change
the weirdos and the strange
getting labelled in the rain
out on the edge of town

when we're counting the time on this clock made of bones
riding the miles of life on these hard roads
we're swallowing the line
getting lost and car sick as we move along

Superb track Tim! Excellent melancholic chord progressions and the lyrics paint an excellent picture of the phrase "things fall apart". The duelling guitar work is also excellent too, perhaps a bit Brian May meets Gobi Desert Canoe Club!

Excellent song. Poignant lyrics, and nice meter in the structure.
That last chord reinforces the uncertain future.
There are only three kinds of drummers. Those who can count, and those who can't.

Sweet christ this is awesome! The chord progression is pure butter, and the rhythm guitars lick your ear like a little puppy.

If you could share how you did the vocals that would be great, definitely headphone candy, will be trying this tune out in a vehicle today hopefully.

Hell yeah, it's sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!!!!!!

Pretty straightforward really: SM58 straight into the MBR. I use the MBR 'Onboard' MIC setting which has just a touch of reverb / echo but is generally quite dry. I do add some extra reverb on the vocal when mastering, but never a crazy amount. The biggest recent difference though is using a pop shield when singing - it really does help, and means you can articulate words however you like.

There's also quite a deep backing vocal harmonising on the chorus (I usually go higher) which helps fatten the sound.

Tim, you get great results with that 58!  You really take the mbr to the max!  You are really great at mixes too.  This is clear!  Lots of songs on the radio and otherwise dont articulate like this.
Music is great as well

I like the sound of your Casino off to one side the other panned opposite with tremolo. They compliment each other. Cool words and vocals. This is a great line "counting the time on this clock made of bones". The dueling lead solo guitars are a real production treat. Each playing a different riff that intersects into a harmony now and then...that is way cool. Excellent songwriting Tim!

Test, test, one, two, three.....is this mic on?

Yeah I miss my MBR, ripped off along with other gear. Using a Tascam DP-008EX right now. Not that the human ear could tell but only a 16 bit input as opposed to 24. The SM58 is a great mic, which got ripped off as well lol. I use a Peavy 100, my ear can't tell the difference anyway.

But you got that vocal lock in which is excellent!

Hearing this makes me wonder if i should try using the SM58 again :) Currently it's literally cathering dust on the floor...

I do think that the most important factor here is the singer. Greeny has his vocal act together and his vocs always sounds so clearly defined and articulate.

The guitars sound fantastic also and it's the clever arrangement and way of using just the right amount of effects that makes it all work so well.

This song has a great way of gently drawing the listener into it before upping the ante with the ear candy. Like those duelling guitars and swirly sounds that are to follow.
