What kind of bass is it?

Ted, it's a Shecter Omen, Part of the diamond series.  I will send a photo later..
it's hot (as in large signal out of the jack) as it is active eq on board.  It is pretty aggressive.

Love it really, Stephen.  Crazed but brilliant.

yeah, my poor wife!  She is so proper.  I think we offset well...

thanks everyone for the comments... the process of me learning to play these, how to tune these (not there yet), record these (certainly not there yet) will be ongoing....
What I am learning is that my better songs I don't play drums on.... lol.... except for one... that "Calling all Eels" goes into orbit...
I can be a primal drummer but proper I significantly doubt will be me... I just could never be disciplined enough... plus there ain't enough time left...lol

cool gear though huh...

After some great suggestions by Zoltan and reading on line I changed the way I mic the drums.  In this test here I used 5 mics.... I added one to the high hat because I like the nuances better... 4 could do the job well.  So I have a dynamic mic (all mics are drum mics by Behringer, except the HH I used my EV 835e dynamic, the kick is a kick mic) on the kick, snare, and high hat.  The two overhead are part of the Behringer set and those are condensers.

I decided to try no compression on recording and added during the mixing, about half on the Zoom L-20 knobs.  Also I added an effect called "Drum Ambience" that is on the L-20 board to each mic.  I still need to find out more about drum tuning etc.... but I like the way these sound....

I realize almost no one wants to hear 3 minutes of a novice drummer but I placed this here more as documentation for the future recordings.  I think if I need to bring down cymbal volume without affecting the toms I could eq them down a bit at the cymbal frequencies..

I watched this recently – for no reason other than it fascinates me. There's probably a lot you can't do with your gear, but also a few things you can apply. I like his approach to EQ-ing: For each drum or cymbal, prop off every band that you can't hear anyway, and then fiddle around the edges of what you can hear.

cool stuff Ted.... a couple of take aways from this...I took notes..

the SM57... and 58 too I would add.... are still great mics for the money... I personally wouldn't sing through a 57 but Steve Walsh of Kansas did for years... and was pretty darn good too...
but that mic is rugged and can be used for most things...
plus you can still get it for around a hundred bucks...or less.

this guys drum sounds amazing...that is a very high standard....
I think they make some plug ins that help do some of these things.  I admit that eq at all is something I am very new at experimenting with but I can attest it makes all the difference in the world... I grasp the concept of trying to get the various instruments off each other... it makes a huge overall difference.

thanks for the input here Ted...

I think the one concept I already do have is "find your own uniqueness.".... ha

Hi Stephen, I was expecting some very loud recording, but the drum sounds were actually very nice, and you played the drums very well imho!
The guitar is so nice, as well.
The bass can actually come up in the mix.
Great work on all the instrumentation, very good mix as well.
Happy New Year, and regards to all your family!
Stay safe and keep healthy!!!
With ,love and respect,
Rene
