Lots of guitar tracks...

I think there's one acoustic and three clean electric rhythm tracks

Then one lead... Harley Benton LP. Playing it more often now just to try and get the feel of it. Yeah so I like the sound of it. A bit more bite in the lead dept I think compared to the usual strat.

2 vocals

Glad You're Coming Home

You've been away
Miles from home
don't think it's been that easy
in the great unknown

You'll be ok
Just give it time
It'll work itself right out
You'll do just fine

And I know next year things will change
And I know you'll be all right
But I'm glad your coming home
At Christmas time

We won't do much
We'll just relax
Share a meal and have a drink
Something like that

It's precious time
Won't get it back
The years they are flying by
And that's a fact

But  I know next year things will change
Yes I'm sure you'll do just fine
But I'm glad your coming home
At Christmas time

—————

But  I know next year things will change
Yes I'm sure you'll do just fine
But  I know next year things will change
Yes I'm sure you'll do just fine
But I'm glad your coming home
At Christmas time

this sounds so lovely Mike... and I really like your photo with the cat laying next to the pedal... very cool..
besides the great jangly guitars I really love the vocals and the wonderful backing vocals... yes... the theme is wonderful as well...
can't wait til you come home...and lets have a nice meal and a drink and just talk... that is what I am hoping for next week when our daughter comes home from college...
I just love her so and miss her tons... so this is getting me looking forward to that more Mike...
thank you!

Oh thank you for the kind comment Steve. That is a co-incidence that it reminded you of your daughter coming back from college. That's exactly what inspired this one.. our daughter coming home from college. for christmas.

Super clean recording, especially with all those guitars happening. Everything perfectly placed in the mix and the Dylan-esque vocal style is fits so well. Great yuletide lyrics too, Mike.

What I enjoy about this is imagining who is the speaker, who is being spoken to, and how.

This song is much more mysterious than it would seem at first blush.

Someone as been absent, away in "the great unknown" and hasn't been seen in years – possibly has been at some personal risk. And the prospect of relaxing with the person, doing nothing, being together brings the speaker great comfort. I mostly imagine a parent speaking to an adult child, but that's not the only possibility.

I'm imagining several scenarios:

  • The person lives in another state or country and has been having somewhat ordinary life struggles (marriage, work, etc.)
  • The person has been traveling in space, and experiencing time dilation (It's precious time / Won't get it back / The years they are flying by)
  • The person has been comatose, or otherwise incapacitated, with minimal brain activity, and is beginning to wake up and recover

After typing all of that (above), I just read this:

I suppose what we think the song is about and what the listener makes it about can be and often are different.  I agree with you Ted, this song could be about those other things... I especially like your observation on the last one, the coma etc... wow... hadn't thought of that.
This is what I really like about SC, that we get to interact with the artists producing the music, the songs... it is one of my favorite things about the site..

I've read a few articles on the blog Recliner Notes – which analyzes the lyrics and music of Bob Dylan and Elvis Costello. The author, Scott Bunn, has really got me to appreciate the intelligence and craft of these two lyricists, and also to scratch at the surface of some of the lyrics here on Songcrafters.

I will take this for a challenge to be more thought provoking and less provoking... or less less thought provoking... is that a thing?
I liked Dylans... " I would not feel so all alone, everyone must get stoned."  deep shite for sure!  and so gol dang tru

DarrenG / The Devil's Toupee

What a lovely song and perfect for Christmas. I really like the twang of those guitars.
Lovely lyrics and vocals are great.
We need more original Christmas songs like this.
