I really like the way John developed the lyrics to unfold in a satisfyingly dark way.

Peace.

Wow! This is like a PSA for support services for American veterans. It's a familiar story:

Quote from: Hawkish AmericansThank you for your service. Now fuck off.

Love the sad gentleness of the music. The guitar limps slightly behind the beat, as though it might give up trying to keep up.   It fits.

Beautiful.  Really like the sparse but ample instrumentation which totally suits the song.  I need to take some pointers from this as I totally overdo everything.   Fantastic vocal performance which is particularly impressive when the music cuts out.  Absolutely touching lyrics. Sublimely effective guitar playing as always.

Very cool song.

Here you go.

Great American Hero

He was not the oldest, but he seemed that way
As he hobbled across the grounds
All the poor decisions from his younger days
Were always hanging around

In the service they sent him from base to base
Training for a war he never fought
So he learned to drink and smoke and
Chase after women if they wanted him or not

His discharge came but the bad habits stayed
And followed like dog he once fed
He spent some time married but couldn't make it last
Always looking for the next bed

He's the great American hero
Living the American dream
Losing his grip on destiny
Trying to survive the next week

He looked to live in a forest
With a river or a lake nearby
Somewhere in the middle of nowhere
Somewhere he could live out his life

Floodwaters took his cabin
Now he's wandering free
Just another homeless no one
Looking for a place to be

He's the great American hero
Living the American dream
Losing his grip on destiny
Trying to survive the next week

The delay effect and repeats on the lead vocal echos into the bottomless canyon, nice! Excellent words and vocal. I need to hear it again as I was listening to the song and forgot to type. The sparseness works well as does the laid-back guitar and tremolo effect. The separation of the tracks and reverb adds to the sad vibe of the song. Well done all!

Superb song! Heard this earlier, but didn't have time to comment. Now on a third run and it gets even better on repeat listens.

This just cool stuff, loving the big delay sound.
It just the vocals that make it for me, then that little guitar 🎸  break, cool!!!

Enjoyed this a lot.  Great performance and production.  Agree with the comment about the impact of the sparse instrumentation - it has just what is needed so is crystal clear and conveys the emotion in a strong way.  Drums sound great - I assume they are real?  This also has a very natural "live" sound - was it entirely live or are there some overdubs?
