in French "faire des ronds dans l'eau" is a colloquial expression which means "to spend one's time doing nothing", I don't know if there is an equivalent expression in English?

I decidedly like "les ronds dans l'eau" I did three covers on this theme, this one is the third "des Ronds dans l'eau" by Pierre Barouh,

If you want to listen to the two other songs of "rond dans l'eau"

it's

"Faire des ronds dans l'eau" by Henry Salvador  https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=28398.msg339915#msg339915

and "les Moulins de mon coeur" by Michel Legrand https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=29182.msg346951#msg346951
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

ah also

I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Lovely recording.

I was unfamiliar with the French expression. This reminds me of an expression in Kamtok (a.k.a. Cameroonian Pidgin English): tonton

Literally it means "turn turn" – or to turn again and again in circles. The idiom means, to hang out, or spend time somewhere doing nothing in particular. I don't think it means exactly the same thing as faire des ronds dans l'eau, but in context it could. If you said you were going to tonton in the garden, it would imply that you were going to relax and putter.

P.S. Here's a song I did in Kamtok

Merci Ted ..very interesting..in French Tonton is a colloquial way of saying Uncle ...so my nieces and nephews could say "Tonton JP" went to Tonton in the garden :D

I am not thinking of any phrase right now JP.  However, the idea is easily understood by what you said.  In the Navy they call this idea "skylarking" which would mean to wander with your eyes in the clouds, the sky.  Likely with hands in pockets.

I like this phrase as I often just day dream.  It's a wonderful escape.

The song is lovely.  I enjoyed seeing your video as well, especially when you threw the rock in the water, producing circles in the water.

and amazing vocals as usual... so hunger in the voice... so much passion it's amazing.

++++++++++++++

Very relaxing song, and very warm vocals.
The guitar is so lovely, and the guitar solo all over the song is very nice embellishment.
The video is so enjoyable, and hanging out in your pond brings the relaxation level 10 fold better!!!
I love this production.
Thank you.
Warm regards,
Rene
