It is a very mysterious and polysemous song...

I give you the lyrics in French, and their translation in English and tomorrow maybe I will give you an explanation of the text

In any case this song appeared in France in 1998 in the album entitled "Fantaisie militaire" This album was consecrated in 2005, at the Victoires de la Musique "best French album of the last 20 years

On m'a vu dans le Vercors
Sauter à l'élastique
Voleur d'amphores

I was seen in the Vercors
Bungee jumping
Thief of amphoras
At the bottom of the creeks
I courted moray eels
I made love, I played dead
You were not born
At the seaside resort
You didn't ask for it
I was a glove of horsehair, a geyser
For a little I soaked
Water story
At night I lie
I take trains through the plain
The night I lie
I wash my hands of it
I have in my boots mountains of questions
Where your echo still remains
Where your echo still remains
I made the season
In this cranial box
Your thoughts
I made them mine
To monopolize you only to monopolize you
From stage to stage
I made dance so many misunderstandings
Miles of life in pink
One day at the circus
Another day trying to please you
Trainer of loulous
Dynamitor of aqueducts
At night I lie
I take trains across the plain
At night I lie
Shamelessly
I have in my boots mountains of questions
Where your echo still remains
Where your echo still remains
I have been seen in the Vercors
Bungee jumping
Thief of amphoras
At the bottom of the creeks
I courted moray eels
I made love I played dead
You were not born
The night I lie
I take trains across the plain
The night I lie
I wash my hands of it
I have in my boots mountains of questions
Where your echo still remains
Where your echo still remains
The night I lie
I take trains across the plain
At night I lie
I wash my hands of it
I have in my boots mountains of questions
Where your echo still remains

Hi Jean,
Another gem of a recording.
I love your words and lyrics.
Vocals is so nice, very nice reverb.
Thanks for sharing this beauty.

Great vocal on this JP and the backing music is excellent. It's always interesting to see the French lyrics and translation. It always seems to me that the lyrics in French popular music are more poetic and deeper in meaning than in popular music from the English speaking world.

According to its co-author JEAN FAUQUE, this song has its origins in the history of the resistance to the occupation of the Second World War in France. More precisely, of those who claimed to be members of the resistance when the outcome of the conflict was obvious, those who are called "the resistants of the last hour".
...? well it is not obvious for the listener, in spite of the few references:
- Vercors: the maquis of Vercors was an important base of the resistance in occupied France
the resort is Vichy (the Vichy regime ensured from 1940 to 1944 the collaboration with the German invader)
- the trains refer to the train of the resistance and the deportation
- across the plain" ...is a reference to the partisans' song "friends do you hear the crows singing on the plain".
- dynamiteurs d'acqueduc" ...these are the sabotages of the Resistance

Alain Bashung gives another explanation : ... It is that of a love story, sensual, with a young woman ("t'étais pas née"), to whom he makes believe all sorts of things to seduce her ("un jour au cirque, un autre à chercher à te plaire").

Pete C, in his commentary on my cover, said
Quote"... It always seems to me that the lyrics in French popular music are more poetic and deeper in meaning than in popular music from the English speaking world ...."
Maybe indeed, but not always. This is a French problem: we are too Cartesian. English speakers are not like that: they think its before meaning. This is what FAUQUE and BASHUNG do here. This text evokes abstract images and we make our own film. You listen to Peter Gabriel's song "Mercy Street", you can also make the same trip. A song should not be a reportage, it should first make us dream.

Finally for the poetic construction (there is a lot of alliteration, anaphora, internal rhyme...) you can link this article
