Thanks y'all! I just uploaded a new mix. Mostly the vocals are a bit lower, but I also fixed something in the "harmonies" that was bugging me.

Quote from: Zoltan on July 12, 2022, 04:22:03 AM(Boo to Betafans. There's a reason it's called "BETA" ;)).

There will always be a warm place in my heart for Betamax. My family's first VCR was a Betamax, and it had a remote control with one button (pause), and a long cable connecting it to the unit. I still have in storage a tape that I used to record music performances off Saturday Night Live, Midnight Special, and other shows that featured live performances.

Quote from: Rene Asologuitar on July 12, 2022, 03:02:46 PMBeautiful vocals, and the harmonies is perfect.

Those perfect harmonies are actually a reference track – a track I made just so I could find my way around the song while I was working on recording the instruments. I did not intend to keep it. I recorded it with the worst mic I have – the little mic on my headphone cable for, like, phone calls. I was hardly even singing. And then I used the Garageband "Helium Vocal" effect. (See above.)

By the time I realized that my friend wasn't going to send me his lead vocals, I was already late for the festival, and I was pretty much in "fuck it" mode, and just wanting to use what I had – including two vocal tracks that were never intended for the final version.

Quote from: cuthbert on July 15, 2022, 03:07:57 PMin many ways I prefer it to the original

That's kind. I don't believe you. Although this isn't intended as a parody, my beef with the original (and much of hard rock) is its seeming self-seriousness. Like I said, I didn't intend for this lead vocal track to make it to the finished product, and when I recorded it, I was kind of goofing on that self-seriousness. I kind of like the results, and will remember this in the future when recording vocals: mock what a rock singer sounds like.

I got betamax a lot later. It smelled funny (a bit like a cat had peed inside of it, perhaps it had?). It didn't work that well. Later i got another, and it also had that same smell (that damn cat sure does get around!). That one did work, but it was a bit clunky. I got it because of the rare and valuable beta tapes i had aquired. All of which i ended up selling.

The moral of this story. If i had got the betamax earlier (before the cat(*) i would have probably appreciated it a lot more :)

(* I don't have a cat so i'm thinking perhaps they had one working at the factory. I can see history being made by a factory worker: "Here' kitty kitty, pee on the betamax so vhs will win the format war!"

I read recently that one of the main reasons that Betamax failed was because of (American) football. The Betamax tapes could not record an entire football game, whereas VHS could.

The idea that Betamax was technically superior to VHS but died because of inferior marketing is something of a myth.

This song was a real workout for my calluses on both hands. My picking hand (right) calluses are usually good enough for my playing regime, but this bass part toughened them up a bit. Similarly, my fretting hand got really sore learning that abridged version of Ritchie Blackmore's guitar solo. Both indicators that I don't play enough.
