It's winter time down under
Below the Southern Cross
A little cool in the morning
There's a layer of frost
I get the scents of eucalyptus
I get the sense of endless space
I see my lover in the window
A strange look on her face

Sometimes I might get homesick
Some fleeting memories
Of events and distant places
Of friends and enemies
I gaze across at the mountains
Stretching out from north to south
I hear my lover speaking softly
Soft words from her mouth

It's like I'm missing a person that didn't exist
I grit my teeth and I clench my fist
I blow a cloud through the morning mist
And head back into the house

She speaks to me later
Calls me on my phone
Crying like a widow she says -
"Maybe you're better off alone"

you can call me anything you like.  Just don't call me late for dinner

Hi Ray,
Dire Straits, or even Paul Simon.
Pretty song, sad lyrics, and well crafted words.
Always love your guitar playing.
Thanks for this song.

Sweet. How do you get that pedal steel sound? With a real pedal steel guitar?

I'm getting a Johnny Cash vibe in the music.  Very peaceful and calm, but uneasy feeling in the lyrics nonetheless.

Quality in this through and through. Agree with the comments about Dire Straights vibe.  Great lyrics.

Amazing track Ray! That glassy lead guitar is stellar, immaculate playing. I love all the little things going on it the mix, such the pedal steel guitar. Great songwriting here too, sounds like a tearjerking country classic!
