Mawf analyses incoming signals and re-renders it using machine learning models of musical instruments


Q: Wait... is this a sampler?

A: Nope We used machine learning (ML) to analyse recordings of professionals playing pieces of music on their instrument. The ML model extracts expressive changes in the instrument at different pitches and amplitudes. Mawf then uses this trained model to best approximate the sound based on how you play it.

Q: So... is it a physical model?

A: Not that either! Physical models require specialised equations for each new instrument. ML requires just a solo recording of the target instrument. But, like a physical model, an ML model of a musical instrument can be pushed beyond its original timbre. Get creative!
