A cold sour evening when I stood on Taylor's porch
In one hand he held a 12-bore; in the other a fading torch
What're ya doing here, boy? This is private land
My eyes fixed on the 12-bore he was holding in his hand
I said, Sir I mean no harm nor to do any damage
I'm just here to ask for your daughter's hand in marriage

He looked at me with eyes that would strip bark off a tree
Why would I let a boy like you take away my Penny-Lee?
You look like a hobo just blown in off the trail
Or maybe out on day release from the Arkansas jail
I said, Sir I'm a good man neither corrupt or savage
I'm just here to ask for your daughter's hand in marriage

He said, son drag your ass from here and don't come back no more
I'll be keeping this loaded shotty right here by my door
This daughter of mine cooks my food and she comforts me
I got a very special place in my heart for Penny-Lee
The last boy that called round here is buried beneath my garage
So turn around and hit the road there ain't gonna be no marriage

Is just a piece of paper
To say a few lines
Make up my mind

Dark and somehow scary, great story and song

Hell yeah! This would have been perfect for the StoryFest a while back. It's a great tale, and the lyrical imagery and storytelling is beautifully done. The plodding, swampy sense of foreboding in the music is magnificent, and the tortured whine of the harp is an outstanding addition. Exceptional!

Redler

Fine story telling song, like a musical short story. Great performance and producing!

Her father was listening, in ambush he lay
He heard the words these lovers did say
And with his sharp rapier he's pierced her love through
And the innocent blood of her darling he drew
