my lap steel (low coast, Harley benton 79 euros  ), ... is equipped with two mutlbenders (expensive! 279 euros ) kind of vibrato levers that allow to raise two strings of a half tone or a tone, a bit like the pedal steel

AHA! So I was hearing things that are not possible with a regular lap steel.

To approximate pedal steel sounds, I've often contemplated getting a B-Bender kit for my Telecaster, but I think I'd like to play around with one first to see if I really want the commitment.
