My Cuban girl
The whitest smile and skin so tight and bronze
My Cuban girl
With flashing eyes and rapid Spanish tongue
I watch her dancing to Afro rhythm
Prettiest girl in the Caribbean
Tough as a pebble precious as a pearl
My Cuban girl

My Cuban girl
In printed dress bright as a butterfly
My Cuban girl
Born on this isle and on this isle she'll die
Of tobacco leaves, famous cigars
1950's American cars
They look at you like you're from another world
My Cuban girl.

Tropical palms and endless beaches
El Presidente and endless speeches

Soft guitar and conga drum
Spicy food and sweetened rum
Large ear ring and dampened curl
My Cuban girl

Ooh, I love this.. so much that I had it on repeat for ages. The bass is very interesting.. is that a fretless or upright bass? Lovely piano and the guitar is sublime. All brought together with a real latin feel and evocative lyrics. Transported me to a better place for a while !

Great song. Really like the laid back Latin-jazzy feel.  Some really cool chord changes. And that Spanish guitar part is gorgeous.

Oh crumbs. This is gorgeous.

I too want to know what that bass is!!!
I have a fretless Jazz and a cheap stick upright.
The second would get me closer to this.
But neither would do it like this.
Oh! I do have a Variax bass somewhere... not used it for years... that will make this sound... but it's got frets on it!

I nearly bought a second hand upright bass... until my wife saw how big it was and where I proposed to "keep" it ;D
I've looked at other options including fretless acoustic bass guitars but, so far, nothing stringed seems to come any closer to the sound of a real upright than what I've got already.

Anyways, cool song and fabulous arrangement.

I had another window open with the On This Day jukebox open. When I clicked on your song, the song in the jukebox started at the same time. It started with crazy percussion, and then your voice floated in over the top. It reminded me of Zappa's Jazz from Hell album where some tunes like "G-Spot Tornado" are held together by this little thread, and then there's all this craziness around it. I listened for a good minute trying to follow the thread, and it suddenly got rattle-your-teeth crazy. It's about then I realized I had both players on.

Let's get this out of the way...Gee, I like your solo version better.

Such a vibe! Beautiful playing, vocals, arrangement, tones, solo. Unbelievably good.

This reminds me a bit of the best that John Martyn brought (his career did take some turns). Different vocal timbre but all the vibe of "Solid Air."

p.s.-I should have written down the song on the On This Day jukebox to recreate the experience (like The Wizard of Oz and Dark Side of the Moon).

Greeny

Yeah - I get a touch of 'Solid Air' on the fretless-sounding bass too. This is completely amazing. Beautifully composed, performed and produced: everything in the right place. Wow!

While i love all your work this one is the topping of the cake and went into the playlist before it was halfway done smoking job brother
