Kinda like Motown and funk, but not even close :) This is a song idea i've had for ages, but never managed to pull it off. The lyrics and vocals are a pain, and the vocals sound wildly out of tune even after years of thinking about them!

The current version (recorded today) has only the basic arrangement and bed tracks (with a scratch vocal track) done. All the lead licks / solos etc. are missing. I'll be adding those + extra stuff when i have more time. The bass is a 70's era Framus jazz bass copy with strings that are at least +30 years old flatwounds...

HIPPIE SOUL SONG
How does it feel?
Being a hippie and trying to sing a soul song
Thanks for asking me
It feels like shitting tons of bricks

Well, how do you make a living?
Not with singing that's for sure
Thanks for asking me
The life ain't what it ought to be

CH:
At best i move like Marlon Brando
But rather be like... Tom Jones
But the Warner don't want me the wife don't love me
So i keep mopping all these dirty floors

I'm posting this here in hopes of getting it finished sometime and getting it out of my system :)

Edit: V2 with some rhythm & guitar stuff added. Last and certainly least i'm going to mix and revisit the vocals :D
Edit: Final version with slightly improved vocals (maybe ;)).
Edit: Removed the "Final" version and changed it to "Stripped" version.

I like the direction it's going in.  Novel concept.  The hippies didn't mix in too well with the soul guys, but both made great music in their own ways.  It's working.  Keep at it,  Looking forward to hearing it finished.

well gee whizz...this is so much fun and the lyrics cracked me up there at the bottom...Warner don't want me and the wife don't love me...so I keep mopping the dirty floor...it's fun and clever and I have my head bobbing...
when i was in HS I worked at a nursing home...doing everything from janitor to laundry and ended up in the kitchen... and I loved the job because I could jam to the radio while mopping the floors and doing the dishes...and it made it all ok...stuff like GrandFunk Railroad, which this reminds me of a bit...those early 70's bands were so good..
cool song

you can call me anything you like.  Just don't call me late for dinner

There's a very retro, sixties feel to this. It weirdly reminds me of something Serge Gainsbourg would have done - musically and lyrically, with the same kind of cool swagger. Especially that chorus - it's bloody fabulous. I can't see that you can do much more with it - it's sounds good to me as it is.

Oh no! I'm suffering an existential mixers crisis! I thought the version above that i uploaded today was the DONE DEAL. Then i heard this Sly Stone song from Youtube (and i was more after Sly Stone sound than anything more produced) and it sounded totally bare... So out goes the reverb(s) and all the extra processing and here's a bare stripped down version of the song.

And now i don't know which version is better. In this version even the vocals are 100% dry and without processing...

Edit: Removed this stripped down version from this post and updated it to the main post. Thanks for all the mix comments :)

Wowzers this one is brilliant, it's like solo Lou Reed crossed with a sprinkling of the White Album. The chorus is fabulous, definitely has a Beatles tinge to it and the guitar work is so damn good.

I like both mixes but I think I might be more partial towards the second version you posted, it has a live feel to it. Either way, this has to be one of my favourite Zoltan songs!  :)

Excellent....fantastic...I love that killer chorus...killer...great solo...so fine....one of the best songs I have heard on here in the past month if i may be so bold.......I like the cleaner 2nd version better..it feels better....tighter...more present....absolutely killer....love that chorus to bits......home run.....you got this song off finally and what a payout...
