In addition I very much like your singing...very unique...I can't think of anyone I know of or heard that you sound like...completely original...
For me I like the music mixed louder into the vocals but not everyone does and this sounds great as is...
Also I enjoy reading about your process

Thanks for your feedback, it is really useful, since one tends to burn out over listening when mixing.  I have adjusted the mix to raise guitars, bass, and keyboard a bit.

To answer your question I used Reaper to record all the tracks, crop start and end points, and:
1. Apply Guitar Amp plugins, adjust levels of various sections, and apply fade out envelopes, combined two mono guitar tracks into one stereo track panned L/R
2. Apply plugins to the vocal (delay), adjust levels of sections, add faint doubled vocal to chorus
3. Generated the drum track with EZ drummer
4. Generated the bass track (from midi) with Sampletank 3

Then I "soloed" each track (or 2 tracks in the case of the panned guitar and doubled vocal) and rendered each to a separate WAV file, and then these files are inputs to my home-made mixing/mastering software.  Eventually I hope to expand my software to do more things, for example I recently enabled it to take either mono or stereo WAV as inputs and was working on panning too.  I don't yet know whether or not I'll be able to figure out how to apply VST plugins, so things like applying amp sims will be done in Reaper for now.  That is not difficult if I record in Reaper, although I wonder if I can figure out how to code recording too....

PS. I do like the CLA plugins (except I wonder if I can figure out what exactly they're doing and achieve similar with my own processing.... If you watch patiently for their sales you should be able to get the whole set (6 plugins) for as little as $60-100, I think.  Or if you just want one or two (e.g. vocals, guitars), I think they are $30 each.  Also I think Waves lets you do a free limited-time demo?

Thanks for the bump, which reminded me about my doing that song. Listening back, of course I think I would like to try to do it better some day. Unfortunately I have not had time to do any recording recently, but I do sometimes sit on the couch at the end of the day and strum my acoustic and there are a few songs I've been trying to learn; my new approach is really spend a long time practicing, hopefully getting to the point where I can play all the way through, and only then consider recording.

I think that method is a good way to do it... and you will end up with a song that you can play for a very long time... I play live at least once in a while to be accountable to at least some songs.... also to see what inspires others on the other side of the mic... and I think being able to play all the way through will give you more ideas when you do record.  take care Doug!
