I wanted a Johnny Cash kinda vocal on this song so I enlisted a friend of mine named David Carter who lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma to sing it for me. A really great guy who sings from his boots ...

A cold dark night and I turn up my collar
The moon in the sky looking like a silver dollar
Followed my baby keeping way behind
Got mud on my shoes got murder on my mind
I'm looking at her lover she's run to in haste
She always did have expensive taste
One hand in her hair, the other hand around her waist
He's got a corduroy coat, a thin leather tie
Gold in his teeth and a glint in his eye
One hand in her hair, the other hand upon her thigh
It's payback time.

Looking younger than me, got a late model car
Looking richer than me like a movie star
Looking fitter than me maybe jogs every day
Looking better than me in every way
He's got pressed pants, a black shirt
A wallet full of money and a head full of dirt
One hand in her hair the other hand under her skirt
He's got a big smile, a big chest
Well manicured, maybe well blessed
One hand in her hair, the other hand upon her breast
It's payback time.

I get so close and I pull out my gun
I see them turn and I see them run
They know why I'm here; they know what they have done.
She was given an inch so she takes a mile
I shoot her with panache and I shoot her with style
Then I shoot him too through his big gold smile
It's payback time.

A fine professional performance and production! Dig the turnarounds, harp and piano riffs a lot!

Those things we take for granted - when we're young and immature - will surely return to haunt us when we're old and insecure

Tight playing and great character vocals. Sounds like this singer could go even deeper than Cash was able to :) The rolling drum track, mighty fine guitar playing and lean & mean arrangement keeps things going. The harmonica was also a nice added colour. I like these kinds of country songs a lot!
The playing was so good that on first listen the lyrics played the second fiddle. Took a second listen to get into the story. So this one works on all levels :)

Love this! Sounds like some good ol' boys. Cool Country song with tasty instrumentation. Very authentic sounding and that piano solo is the bee's knees!

You have a lot going on - harmonica, slide guitar – but it's all seasoning on that "boom-chicka-boom" rhythm. The vocals aren't only great, but they are well recorded.

I was going to comment on the lyrics with a personal anecdote, but I'll let Chris Rock say it for me:

Quote from: Chris RockNow I'm not saying he should have killed her... but I understand.

thanks for putting the lyrics Ray

...a song and a story almost cinematographic we could well see a clip of illustration on this song

I am always very impressed by the quality of your harmonica playing
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.
