Thought I'd greenify this country classic  ;D ::)

Always loved that 'smile for a while' bridge part. In fact, it's one of my favourite musical moments ever.

Two layers of Telecaster, GB drums, Ibanez bass, and two layers of vocals. All done on the MBR.

Nice one. A cooler version than the Lynn Anderson hit.

I was just reading about this song on Wikipedia and discovered that it was written in 1967 by Joe South ("Games People Play", "Walk a Mile in My Shoes") and was first recorded by Billy Joe Royal ("Down in the Boondocks", "Cherry Hill Park"), three years before Lynn Anderson recorded it. Joe South recorded his own version in 1968, and it was also recorded by Dobie Gray ("Drift Away", "The 'In' Crowd") in 1969. It's interesting because everyone identifies this song with the Lynn Anderson version and so they think of it as a woman's song. But it was written by a man and recorded by three different male singers before Lynn Anderson ever recorded it.

Fantastic version, Greeny. Excellent vocals, and your Tele sounds positively Vintage Country on this.

Love it!

Love that tremelo effect... always love that in a song. This is a great bit of country and you've added a bit of oomph to the original which was a good call I think. Great cover.
