I guess I've been watching too much CNN ....

Anyway this song came to my attention ... never heard it before but the Leo Kottke version(s) are rather fabulous in my view.

I tuned my twelve string (with waaayyyyyy old strings) down to an open D tuning and bought a new bottleneck as I couldn't find my old one, and the one I made from an aussie wine bottle wasn't quite wide enough. Did several live takes, fu(k!ng up the lyrics. Caved and recorded the guitar first and added the vocals.

All recorded on the Boss MicroBR80, trimmed and converted to mp3 in Audacity.

I love the storytelling in this song, and given more time I'd try to add a slide solo, but for now this is what I got.

Check out Kottke if you haven't heard him before ... a great, somewhat different, and inspiring guitarist.

cheers

it's not like Kottke is an unknown...he was big...one of those guys well known to musicians.  never being mainstream.  I never developed much affection for him because I generally didn't buy stuff I hadn't heard much ....having said this there is a reason all the musicians loved the guy...
Eric Johnson (totally different style but same idea) was the same way... when he came to town, all the musicians came to hear him.  I was on the fringes because back then I was sort of a musician and sort of not....but I would go hear this guy today if given the chance...
where I live there are literally hundreds of bluegrass musicians who are absolutely great musicians that almost no one outside of their sphere of influence will every hear...
I am glad today that I am a musician....because there is pleasure in playing...
I don't know why I am rambling on like this...my god man...sorry...I was going to delete this and should actually...

love your singing Geir and your playing is good...perhaprs one night soon I will dig up the original but for now I will listen to your cover again!  You have one of those voices that comforts a soul...kiind of like Mark Knopfler when he is mellow!

A very well done version of Pamela Brown, Geir! The 12 string sounds great as does your vocal. Speaking of Leo Kottke, I saw him in concert in 1969 when he was a young and lessor known musician. The guy blew me away with his style of finger picking and open tunings. He must of had a dozen acoustic guitars on stage and he played each one throughout the concert. He was amazing but never sang a word. He was all instrumental at that time. I'm gonna dig through my stack of albums/cassettes/cds to see if I can find some Leo K. music.

Don't know the original but this is great. Your vox in particular are fab on this, I love the "grit" in your voice. The guitar sounds pretty good to me, and works really well with the feel of the track. Off to look up the original right now......

Me too, I love Leo Kottke,..since the 70's (I did a cover of "Louise" on SC...)but I didn't know this song, you played it well

your voice is great in this song and the 12 strings in the bottleneck is really nice

..out of curiosity I will try to jam with you with my dobro ;)
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.
