How The Light Gets In
Lyrics cut up from Leonard Cohen songs
Recorded/mixed/mastered in Garageband on my iPad
keyboards from Garageband and mellotron app (M3000HD)
Vocals recorded into Garageband via onboard mic
Squier Jazzmaster through Zoom G3 pedal
Seagul Acoustic recorded into Garageband using onboard mics
Sterling Ray25CA Bass (Keith played the bass) through Zoom B3 pedal
This started out with me experimenting on Gargeband with the drums.  I tried all the different ways to get drums and came up with a few interesting patterns.  I decided to try to use this for a cut up song. I used various lyrics from Leonard Cohen songs, cut up and mixed up...interesting imagery on those songs. I decided to have some fun with the music and try a kind of cut up musically as well by using a few genres and mix them up....all done on the iPad in garageband...it was good to get a full song complete again, its been awhile...I had lots of fun making this.....for vocals I sang direct into my iPhone with the little mic attached to the headphones...seems to have worked out ok.....there you have it...I got on in for a festival...feels good.  Everything was done by me except the bass...I asked Keith if he would have a go and he nailed it...so good to have a top notch bass player in the house...

Fantastic song, BB - really enjoyed that. Top-notch playing (well done, gentlemen) and singing, and just an excellent vibe overall. Is that a Mellotron I hear in the background?

Loved it!

Great stuff Dave (and Keith). Love that opening riff, it really grabs you straight away and draws you in, and I like how you keep using it throughout the song. Nice solo over that riff in the middle part as well. The groove is really great, the drums suit it really well and the guitars create quite a lush feel to this. The vocals came out pretty well considering you sung them into a phone mic, they haver a slight "effect" on them which suits the feel of the song. The lyrics cutup worked really well, surprisingly I didn't end up terminally depressed after hearing them..... ;) I too am hearing something synthy/keyboardy (around 1:40 for example), is there something additional in there?

Overall it sounds great and worked really well, it's a great listen. Good to hear you back doing a full song, more please!!!

Oooh... nice. Really digging those proggy keys that come in around 1:50, but it's that guitar riff that stands out - scorching hot. And the way the lead guitar goes all 'Spanish' around 3:00. This track covers a lot of sonic ground and it's all good. Complicated but accessible. Great bass playing and production too. A winner! Although you're inflaming my Jazzmaster GAS :-)

And it is indeed good to see you posting new originals!

Yep tried to do the cut up fest but my brain will not let me get disorganize and it all sounded like crap.  This on the other hand is great can not believe the phone mic did this but it is the end results that count and you have nailed it
Well done Tim

I love Leonard Cohen songs and I love this cut-up of LC lyrics.    The instrumentation is really cool.   It's interesting how little details can humanize things ... I absolutely LOVE it when I can hear the fingers squeak on strings. Some people try to get rid of that and I like it better with the string squeak left in.

Bluesy guitar-solos are fantastic.   Great work. So this was all Garageband on iPad? That's amazing.

I think I need a JazzMaster also.

this is so cool and so good too..... reminds me of the Kinks in a way....light parts followed by distant vocals followed by dreamy sounds.... this is so interesting and love the lead guitar too...the double lead.... and it's all good, every bit of this....the lyrics are interesting for sure....

Good to hear you posting again Dave. Good tune, love the laid back vocals and your lead is always a treat.
Glad Keith got the bass in.
Coolness.
