Childhood fantasy meets Adult reality.

Taylor 314ce acoustic
synth finger drum and wood blocks
High Spirits Pocket flute

...and my best attempt at an Irish accent :-))

WHEN I WAS JUST A LAD OF 10 MY FATHER SAID TO ME
TIME TO SAY GOODBYE ME BOY TO THE LAND OF MAKE BELIEVE
I LOVED TO PLAY ALONG THE STONES THEY WERE MY CASTLE WALLS
'TWAS I THAT MUST DEFEND THEM OR MY KINGDOM IT WOULD FALL
MOTHER'S WORN OUT BROOMSTICK WAS MY MIGHTY STEED
A BROKEN PIECE OF PICKET FENCE THE SWORD THAT I WOULD NEED

CHORUS: LAND OF MAKE BELIEVE, LAND OF MAKE BELIEVE
I WOULD LOVE TO WANDER IN THE LAND OF MAKE BELIEVE
LAND OF MAKE BELIEVE, LAND OF MAKE BELIEVE
LIFE WAS ALWAYS FUN IN THE LAND OF MAKE BELIEVE

A LITTLE MASK OF SHEEPSKIN A TATTERED VEST OF WOOL
A SHIELD FROM A BOX I MADE MY ARMOUR IT WAS FULL
ONE DAY I SAW A LEPRECHAUN HE TOOK ME BY THE SLEEVE
WE FLEW OFF ON A UNICORN TO THE LAND OF MAKE BELIEVE

CHORUS

A CRUST OF BREAD A BIT OF BROTH WAS ALL WE HAD TO EAT
POTATOES LOST UNTO THE BLIGHT WE RARELY HAD SOME MEAT
ME DAD WOULD LOOK UPON ME MUM AND STROKE A LOCK OF RED
"I KNOW THAT WE'VE NO MONEY DEAR, BUT I'LL LOVE YA 'TIL I'M DEAD"

CHORUS

HE TOOK A DRINK OF WHISKEY THEN NOT LIKE HIM AT ALL
HE WAS NOT A DRINKIN' MAN, FARMIN' WAS HIS CALL
HIS EYES THEY FELL UPON ME, A TEAR FELL TO HIS SLEEVE
SAID "I WISH THAT I COULD JOIN YA SON IN THE LAND OF MAKE BELIEVE"
"I WISH THAT I COULD JOIN YA SON IN THE LAND OF MAKE BELIEVE"

I'm not up on my accents but have been watching the Scottish based Outlander series with the wife and your song sure sounds like it's from that side of the pond! Well done!

Those things we take for granted - when we're young and immature - will surely return to haunt us when we're old and insecure

man do I love this...first off the lyrics...and I totally get it...that is how I grew up...and chair on its back was a snowmobile...and man could I do the chain saw and snowmobile sound so good ( ha still get a roar for it from a crowd)....
man you are talking of a better age and time...we didn't need toys... we had imagination...
the music is great.. I like the accent as I like all accents...whether it's Irish or not I am not qualified to say....
this is a garganturan homerun.... Babe Ruth big!

you can call me anything you like.  Just don't call me late for dinner

Loads of celtic goodness on this. Somewhere between an Irish jig and a Scottish reel. With a fair bit of medieval madrigal. It's fabulous. I originally heard it on my phone this morning (via latest posts) and assumed it was on the covers board. So kudos for making an original that has a definite air of authenticity about it.

Really nicely written, played and produced!

Ray Brookes

Cool traditional sounding Irish folk song and the sparsity of the accompaniment makes this bright little tune even more authentic. Cool lyrics too and reminiscent of many people's childhoods.

This is great fun, love the instrumentation and the genuine feel of this one. The flute and the wood blocks in the chorus are quite wonderful, a really clever touch. Well done indeed (although do keep practising that accent...... ;)).

DarrenG / The Devil's Toupee

Excellent song, I love the lyrics, the music really has that Irish / Celtic feel. It could lend itself to Scottish music too. The accent is pretty good too :) great playing and production sounds really good.
I have 2 profiles on this site, (NOW COMBINED INTO ONE PROFILE PAGE)
One is a musical partnership with Keith Allen, ( we record songs as "The Devil's Toupee").
The 2nd one is for my other musical projects and collaborations. (DarrenG)
Thanks for listening.

Thanks gang.

Hardlock; We've watched the Outlander series as well. Very cool series. I love historical stuff.

Stephen M:  What would childhood be without a good imagination! I agree wholeheartedly..

Greeny: My knowledge of various UK countries and their music is embarrassingly small...but just glad you enjoyed it.

Ray:  With my ever fading hearing, i find that the fewer the # of tracks, the better the outcome at mix time.

Nigel...yes, i'm afraid this old Appalachian hippie is not about to bluff anyone with my attempt to sound Irish. Fun tryin' tho.

Devil's Toupee: Regrettably, i don't know how to distinguish Scottish music from Irish. You guys have a big edge on me there...

Dunny: haha...i sang lower to make my voice sound more forceful. Yet another story telling tune. It was fun doing this. Thanks.

Cuthbert: It's always good to get out of one's comfort zone. Glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks to you all for the listen and comments.
