"Lady Freedom" is the name of the statue atop the United States Capitol building. I remember a trip I took to our nations Capital in about 1998. A tour guide told us that no building in Washington DC was allowed to be higher than her.

Thinking about the good old days when freedom was much more respected than it has been lately.

How long have you and I been friends?
Through all of my life, so now it ends
You cared for me in my early years
Thru mid life you saw me through my darkest fears

They had their plan to bring you down
The evil in their hearts was so profound
They hold you captive, suppressed your gift
and the freedom that you offered has gone adrift

Lady Freedom. Precious liberty
You've been so grand a guardian of our fair land

(Preamble to US Declaration of Independence Spoken)

As schoolboy, I saluted you with my heart in hand
And as a young adult I vowed that for you I'd stand
I've always felt so privileged to call you home
And now I'm left to mourn my loss
though I'm not alone

Lady freedom. You've meant the world to me
They've so callously destroyed my home and security
Lady Freedom. Precious liberty
You've been so grand a guardian of our fair land

I powerfull set of lyrics.
Brings it home just whats going on in your country.
The world is in disarray just now.
I always love that piano sound you get.
Nice classy playing to a thought provoking subject.
Well done.

That piano is outstanding! The chords in this song are so strong and gripping and the way it was recorded makes it sound actually like something out of a 70s song. What's your secret? :) Strong set of words as well and I admire the melodic, sort of John Deaconesque bassline you put in there.

Ray Brookes

Always love the music you present, John; always very melodic with interesting chord progressions. Production is first class and the playing of piano & bass is so tasteful. Cool lyrics too and a kind of sad reflection on the recent turmoil in your nation's capitol.

Very creative stuff John. I especially like the change of feel in the chorus. Some great piano playing in there and some great arranging going on too. It was a big shock watching the events in Washington unfold on TV. Very surreal. Super song.

John....this is heartfelt amazing stuff.... to sing about such a  painful thing is very big on your part...  I so love your voice...attention to details.... pauses....big sounds...  and yes millions feel the pain... I've reconciled mine... if I don't meet you here I'll see you in the sweet by and by.... just hold onto love... don't let it grow cold no matter if the heavens fall...

Lovely work John, wonderful composition and piano playing with a lovely lyrical bass line. Your vocals are beautifully handled and it's very well recorded and mixed. It sounds fantastic.

Democracy is a fragile thing that is too easily subverted by demagogues and thugs. We saw that in Europe after WWI. Let's hope things work out for the best in the US.

This is a great song. Really well written and performed and your lyrics are clearly from the heart. Having watched in horror from across the pond here's to justice and democracy for all.

the theme is so high that is hard to have a song about it ... but you made it so concrete (with the statue reference, and of course we cant help but think in reference to what happened recently) and personal/heartfelt that is really more than a reflection, is really a touching song, I loved it ...

Nicely done John. Your voice, words and music all fit together so well. I love that bass line and piano. I totally agree with the sentiment in your lyrics. Lady Freedom will stand strong as long as we believe and support the six goals of the Preamble to the Constitution!
