Hi Gang,

I hope you are all well.

I have had a long dry spell and have just broken it with this song.

My brother wrote the lyrics and I wrote the music and did everything else.

I hope you like it.

Welcome back Ian, glad you broke your dry spell. I really liked this one, a very interesting style, it's kind of folk/rocky a bit early Thin Lizzy ish. The subject matter probably leans me that way. It's incredibly catchy (I'll be singing it all day for sure) and I really like the instrumentation. Do tell us a bit more about how you did this. The rhythm guitar has a really interesting sound that blends well with the keys, and it sounds like there might be some mandolin or something similar in there. I loved the drums as well. Inquiring minds would like to know more.....

A really good listen, more please (although I'm a fine one to talk  ;))

Nice to see you back! Like the folky Irish edge on this. Agree with Nigel's Thin Lizzy reference - it's like a 'Whisky in the Jar' cover of a traditional song. That's a big hook on the chorus. Lovely stuff :-)

love the guitars.....it's hard to sound orig with guitars but I think you've done it...because as Ferryman said it seems you have crossed numerous style lines with this...and I would say that it's interesting to see what kind of songs you get when people just write songs without trying to be one "genre"..... if this is fiction then you have created an interesting character...if it's factual sounds like someone who means alot to you...or perhaps an observation about some folks you know....wonderful stuff...

Thanks Nigel and others for the welcome back.

The lyrics for the song were written by my brother. They appear in the draft of an unpublished book he has recently completed. The book features a character who is a songwriter. I put his lyrics to music and performed it. The interesting part is that the songwriter is a teenage girl and therefore my performance is somewhat removed from what it "should" sound like - I'm not good enough at faking :-)

The music for the song is based upon the same four chords (D, C, G, Em) just looped over and over.

Guitars: The rhythm guitar is my Strat played directly into my audio interface with a Presonus "Crunch" patch on it. The Bass is also direct into the interface with some sort of bass patch - the bass is playing the I, III, V notes from each of the chords.

There are two "melodic" guitar tracks, both using the Strat straight into the interface. One goes through an Electro-Harmonix Canyon pedal, set to Octave. That provides the dreamy delayed and pitch-shifted shimmer effect. The other guitar melody track is the Strat recorded "clean". They are panned opposite each other, so one side is Cocteau Twins and the other side is Hank Williams. The melody is the same 8 bar (I think) loop right through the song just played in different octaves.

Keys. There is a track that captures my MicroKorg set to a Vintage patch. The story in my brother's book is set in the 1980s, so I tried to pick a synth sound that reflected that time. The synth is playing the full chords during the verses and the  I, III, V notes from each of the chords during the Chorus.

Drums: The drums are EZ Drummer. I tried to find appropriate patches for the song. I use the program to iteratively arrange the drums to match the song. I usually work out a sketch drum track and go back and select the final drum patches later - this one was probably a bit too rocky but all the pieces fit so I left it as it was.

Mixing: The song is recorded and mixed in Studio One 5. I have used some Soundtoys effect patches (Effect Rack 2) and some Presonus patches (EQ and Compresssion) here and there but its fairly minimal.

I hope this answers some of your questions.

regards,

Ian
