Thanks for the feedback everyone, much appreciated  ;D

The "doom" thing is more the genre than the actual concept. My inspiration here was doom metal, which uses slow, heavy beats and sludgy, choppy guitars. So Keith had it nailed when he mentioned Sleep, which is one such band. However, I think I went a bit proggy and I can see where the Rush comparisons come from, which is definitely a compliment in my book!

Thanks to everyone who said they would like to see more song postings from me. Sadly, that is unlikely to happen because even though I have more time (being retired), my obsessive nature means that I spend a long time composing, arranging, recording and mixing anything. I try to make every sound as "perfect" as I can make it, which means I can spend ages fiddling with effect settings and stitching together multiple sounds and tracks to create a sound that I have in my head. Which is a weird place.

So I will forever be a slow worker but I enjoy the process so much I am unlikely to change.......

Quote from: WarpCanada on February 10, 2021, 06:02:22 PMDo you master with Ozone9 in standalone mode?   I'd like to know how you set up the custom drum setup on the boss also.
I record everything on the BR-800 and mix everything in my DAW on the PC. I use Neutron Elements (from Izotope) as a plugin on every channel for EQ and compression, and I use Izotope Tonal Balance Control on the master bus to help check the final mix. I then master in standalone Ozone 9, mainly using presets with slight tweaks.

I'll do a post in the Boss recorders section on how I use the Boss drum editor. I have got to grips with this and was pleased with what I was able to achieve. I'll be using this more in future.

Dear Nigel,

I don't care how often you post because each time is a joy.

This was magnificent.

woohoo! This is fun! Loved that dark and ominous tone. Am i right in thinking you did this ALL with a 6 string bass and effects? If so, it's genius. Loved the cool stops at around 1:30 and also the section around 2:30 when the "guitar" sounds return. Then the proggy section did pull in some Rush similarities. Your drum programming is way beyond anything i could ever do. The mix and production was stellar Nigel... your "obsessive" issues may be a hindrance to quantity but speak well of the quality. As i have said before, the older i get the more i enjoy instrumentals. They allow you to take the song mentally wherever it will, and lyrics tend to lead the listener. Would love to see/hear you work up another piece like this. Gotta have a "B"side! Excellent work Nigel..loved it.

Been looking forward to this since I saw it posted. It's doom-laden alright, but with a bit of punk sneer / attitude. Like Black Sabbath meets Killing Joke. Production-wise it's perfectionist perfection ;-) And I don't know how you can get everything sounding that heavy and massive with such clarity. Those stereo drum rolls from left to right - f*cking amazing! It's all positively symphonic. Cor blimey - it's off the scale incredible.

There's a bit at 2:10 which really reminds me of 'Angel' by Massive Attack. Same kind of massive chord sounds.

wow! you have just created your own genre Nigel. And some of those bass sounds have your signature all over them. Have soNgplayer on in the background and new this was one of yours just by listening. Not only do we need more alt rock we need more stuff from you. Ya lazy bugger. That said your stuff is always worth the wait.

Massive sounding Nigel. I am also getting a touch of the Cure thrown in here to the mix. A really moody, brooding huuuuge wall of sound. Very well crafted and great stuff indeed.

Two things, never read comments on a Ferryman  tune cause it always going to be great, second too short can't  get enough  of a good thing  ;D
Apart from the above, enjoyed it lots, more please!
