DIRT ROADS & TIME PAST 09 COLORADO COWBOY

In the 1850's, the American west was truly still a "wild west". There were no highways, bridges, or fences to speak of. Texas cattlemen would hire cowboys (drovers) to drive their herds of cattle hundreds of miles over months to the stockyards. Wide open prairie, sunrise to sunset. When they got paid, many were laid off until they did it all again the next year. In between, they were free to do whatever called them. This is a song about one of those cowboys...

Colorado Cowboy

He was layin' out on the prairie..his campfire burnin' low...
Ain't no need to hurry..he got no where's to go
Maybe to the south where the sun is warm get some refried beans and Mexican corn..
  (CHORUS) He's a cowboy..Colorado Cowboy

He got a buckskin horse right near by, grazin' in the ol' moonlight...
Somethin' 'bout the sound of the river...makes him feel alright...he's thinkin' 'bout a sweet little seniorita..the sound of guitars and a shot of tequila..
  CHORUS

  HARP SOLO

Well there's a coyote howlin' out in the hills singin' that lonesome song..
But somethin' about it..it gives him a thrill..he knows it won't be long..
'Til he's up on his horse in the mornin' sun..hot on the trail of some goodtime fun..
   CHORUS

Maybe some day he gonna settle down..find a place to be happy..just hangin' around..he's
a cowboy...Colorado Cowboy..
yeah he's a cowboy...Colorado Cowboy.

I was just watching "Aerial America" on the Smithsonian channel and it was about the formation of Dallas and Fort Worth... fits right into your story... It's hard to imagine that the 50 states didn't always exist....  yes those cowboys were instrumental in getting meat back east and bringing wealth into the southwest...
big thoughts and big song... not bad for a northern NYer!
good singing...and playing...

Lovely. The harmonica is so sweet yet plaintive. Great storytelling and imagery on the lyric too. You perform it so well - just sounds so 'right'. Love that ending! Excellent.

hardlock

Great song. Both educational as well as fine listening! Perfect harp work there - Reminded me of the famous Blues Brothers line - "we got both kinds. We got country *and* western." ;)

Those things we take for granted - when we're young and immature - will surely return to haunt us when we're old and insecure

A good song Pine! Songs about Cowboys and their contributions the USA are always a winner in my book. Loved the harmonica and the lonesomeness it brought to the song.

I didn't realize how much I was yearning for some twang in my day. This really hit the spot. I'm digging the harmonica work a lot. That vocal delivery works very well, too. Kind of reminds me of Commander Cody a little bit for some reason.

A little Americana is always good and this song has it to a t. I love the harp winding it's way through the song

Life is not about the number of Breathes you take, it is the amount of times your breathe is taken away

Thanks you guys... really appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment on this Americana tune.
Forgot to mention in the description that this was once again my old pal Jimmy on the harp, which, IMHO, totally makes the song and generates that "lonesome" vibe as Farrell pointed out. What a different lifestyle than any of us live in today's world...
