Pick ONE Album Everyone Should Listen To

I suggest a new thread.  Considering that we all like different genres, pick a Genre that you don't normally listen to, and then state ONE Album, that is something you could listen to forever, especially if it's not even in your favorite genre, or it's not your very favorite artist of all time.   Especially pick one that you don't even like EVERY album by this artist, but you LOVE THIS ONE ALBUM.

So for me, Jazz is a genre I have a conflicted relationship with (sorry if you're a jazz fiend).

But I really really love one of Keith Jarrett's albums:

The Köln Concert.

For me, it was a revelation. I just put it on and got LOST in it.  Why should everyone listen to it? Because it's a musical mind at work and you can literally hear the gears clicking over in his Jazz Brain, and he does really interesting and magnificent stuff on a piano, that apparently was poorly regulated, and which he was fighting against for dear life.  This is an artist in a crucible.  Everyone should experience it, with the lights out, and with very good headphones.  Some people don't like the fact that Keith makes odd noises while he's in the midst of musical ecstasy.  I think it's a sign that he's being completely and utterly himself, and is not even aware of anything but the act of creativity.  He is being a musician on a level few of us ever reach.  He's a weird dude, and his playing technique is unorthodox to the point that it cripples him.   He's arrogant and behaves badly. But his music. Wow.

Now tell me ONE album, and why it's essential and everyone should listen to it.

So hard to not mention any other albums, but it has to be "watch" by Manfred Mann's earth band.

A band I never knew much about apart from their cover of Blinded By The Light which I always loved as a kid... Just checking this one out now... it is great so far

Kansas "Somewhere to Elsewhere".... it is not well known....came very late in their careers after lineup changes and lead singer leaving, Kerry Livgren leaving...then they all got back together and Kerry wrote much of it....plus they had Billy Greer, who had taken over on bass, singing as well (and Dave Hope the original bass player also contributed).... so I would say if you like Rock music and you know a little of Kansas say "Carry on wayward son" or "Dust in the Wind" then you would like this album.... my favorite song is "Look at the Time"....it is a fantastic track...but the whole album is really good....and there are alot of other Kansas LPs that no one or hardly anyone knows that are fantastic...

Since Stephen has already chosen a Kansas album (and I don't disagree with his choice at all), I will go with another all-time fave of mine.

Jethro Tull - Heavy Horses.

My choice would be So by Peter Gabriel 1986 - I don't like Genesis, either Gabriel era or Phil Collins era, and have always preferred guitar-based music. In 1986, we went to South of France on holiday and every day while we were lying on the beach, there was a little beach bar playing music, alternating all day between So and BAD by Big Audio Dynamite. I'd heard both albums so many times by the time we came home I had to buy both. Being a Clash fan, I'd probably have bought BAD anyway as it was Mick Jones' post-Clash band but would never have imagined buying a Peter Gabriel album.

Its an album I still listen to.

It's neat Paul that you love Kansas the band too.... sometimes in your songs I hear a reflection of the influence....I don't think I have ever tried to play any of their stuff other than a few riffs....it is just so complex... and they had like 6 musicians...so I am not going to feel bad about it...I also like Tull although not nearly as much as Kansas....but Ian Anderson has some really great solo stuff too....

Why so, you ask? This is a quintessentially English album. He's a local boy from Winchester and every flipping song on this album makes you stop in your tracks and think. Its not an album where every song sounds similar though - but this album is jam-packed with TUNES. I absolutely loved this album when I first heard it - and am still listening to it.

Perhaps it won't stand the test of time, perhaps it will? I think so.

Just sampled each track to remind myself. Every song is great, "Rivers" and "I am disappeared" are outstanding imo - but I would say that :-). Wessex boy makes me smile, as I've played with Mazz at the Railway Pub in Winchester.
