On this day in 1966, a small mining community in South Wales suffered a catastrophic land slide after much rain. Waste from the coal mining operation engulfed the primary school, killing 116 children and 28 adults.

My modest tribute here has 116 C notes in the ukulele part to remember the children.

Aberfan ("Abba-van") is just 20 miles away. We've had a fitting day of heavy rain today.

A lovely and fitting tribute to that terrible disaster - my wife had only been talking about it earlier today. Don't know if it was intentional but it reminded me of a harp ( for those who don't know a traditional Welsh instrument)?
I remember seeing this on the news as a 6 year-old and living in what used to be a mining town with a lot of slag heaps around brought it closer to home.

I've just sat quietly listening to this in the dark and thinking about the children and their families and friends.

It's very powerful Nick, the ringing Cs for each child really touched my heart and the more I played it the more powerful it became.

The song is more than you if that makes any sense.

RIP xx

comme ci, comme ça

I remember this, I saw the news item on our small black & white tv, I was 5.

I remember discussing it with my mum. I remember the harrowing scenes of parents witnessing the hopelessness of the situation. This was my first memory of tragedy, still etched.

Very powerful indeed.

i remember watching this on a wee black and white tv, the screen was the size of an ipad mini, tv was in a unit the size of a welsh dresser.
i was 6 or 7 but i can still remember the horrible footage. I don't know how to comment on the music, music is beautiful and haunting, memories just haunting.

Most people of our age group from the UK remember this tragedy. I was actually 9 years old when this hideous scene appeared on our TV. A fitting plaintive and emotive musical tribute to the poor souls who lost their lives that terrible day.

Of course I remember it well too.  I recall the silent assembly at my inner city junior school after the headmaster told us about this.  I was only about 8 at the time yet the tragedy was deeply upsetting, and still is.
