In the late 80's Bristol was the place to be musically and a new sound was being forged by a young band who called themselves Gordano, mainly because that's where they lived.

The genre was dubbed ClaustroRock because of its close, driving yet sparse nature and its bleak lyrics and melodies.

Gordano played local clubs and bars around the Bristol area and attracted a young and affluent following, making them a popular act to book. In March 1991 they were approached by Stop! records and offered a two album deal.

Having only a handful of original songs Gordano went into the studio and spent the next four months writing and recording their first album 'Mannequin Stupid Man' from which this track is taken.

Before the release of the first album,  the self titled 'Gordano' second album was recorded and produced.

It was during the tour of Germany and Italy in 1992 that a tragic road accident involving the tour bus and a number of other vehicles resulted in the death of all of the band members and a significant number of the crew.

'Gordano' was released in September 1992 to great musical acclaim and the Motorway services near to Bristol was renamed Gordano Services in honour of the band.

In 2005 a third album, simple named 'Dritte' was released, a collection of previously unreleased tracks and some alternate versions of their earlier B sides.

Their first two albums went platinum in Germany, Poland, Hungary and Romania. They still are seen as quite niche in the UK.

Ooh, very nice dense, dark and claustrophobic track from Gordano. I really liked the way they combined a pulsing bass line with synths and somewhat scary vocals. It's a great pulsing vibe that would shake the very foundation of the Clifton Suspension Bridge if played at suitable volume.

You know that M4/M5 interchange has a lot to answer for...... And is it true that Alison Goldfrapp found some unreleased Gordano demo tapes that inspired her to make the move to claustro-disco?

Fabio disco techno .
I used to have the album but it mysteriously disapeared after an all night party.
I guess the lure of the album was that strong someone had to have it.
I even had hid it in between my Daniel o'Donnell greatest hits collection ,I think theres at least 40 albums but surprisingly  none of them were taken.

Great song great vibe.

I love this. I love everything about it. So far up my street that I could live in it. It sounds like the old Doctor Who theme that's been made to cry from claustrophobia in a small, dark room. That pulsing, sizzling bass synth is pure filth, and the vocal is brilliant. My only complaint is that it should have been a 6 minute epic. I agree with Nigel - I can hear that Goldfrapp's 'Strict Machine' ripped this off a bit. My new favourite band.

Very creative... dense and ominous sounding... like it should be played in some dark, futuristic nightclub in BladeRunner or something like that. Some cracking keys and what's that strange flickering noise!? Cool...

I listened to this earlier and I liked it. Now on the second listening this sounds even better, very catchy on its way!

Gordano, great DM / techno band from the Nineteens...must get familiar with their discography :)
