Can you help me understand the 3 band comp?

Im a huge fan of the old CS-2, though I also have an old Ibanez style comp.  I actually think transparency is a good thing with a comp.
I set my SC-2 as follows,

Level-anywhere, though I usually turn it up on the strat, too high gives you alot of hiss.

Attack-noon, I dont like my signal to be flattened, it removes the dynamics

Sustain 9 o'clock-too much higher and it sounds artificial and you introduce noise.

Excellent explanation. This helps a lot with my settings. I tried the max attack at our band practice and I think it's better.
