The album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" came out in '73 but this song was released as a single in '74 so I think it should qualify.
This is actually a take of my very 1st time playing this song. I have been listening to the album a lot but have never played this prior to this morning. I pulled the chart up on my phone and every chord that I strum and let ring is me sliding my finger to move the chart. While I suppose I could do better after a few practices I like this recording. Kala Archtop Tenor Uke and the BR80 in the car.

Because the Hook brings you back
I ain't tellin' you no lie
The hook brings you back
On that you can rely

Bravo!..not easy to sing this song with only arpegio on the Uke...You have a good voice my friend
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Sounds just perfect to me - really dig those arpeggios (nice, bell-like tones) and a great vocal.

Well done, Mr. Hook.

Holy-freakin'-moley...   What an amazing 'FIRST TAKE'!!  :o

Seriously; your vocals are heartfelt and your timing with the words is spot on!  There's a couple of lines that have always tripped me up and you smooooothed right  through them..  Bare-bones and beautifully rendered.  (Even the uke with it's somber then intense flow and ebb seems caught up in the emotion of the song!)   A very worthy submission to the 1974 festival!!

udamon!

Love to hear these takes we get on Songcrafters sometimes that are very raw and spontaneous - they really capture the moment that more rehearsed performances lack. Having said that, there is nothing "out" or "dodgy" in this performance Hook. This is really good stuff and with that 110% heart it's a great listen.

Bowls me over that you knocked this out as a first take. You have a distinct voice I really appreciate. Miss you, brother.

Thanks Groundy for bringing this to my attention. I'm no Elton fan but I loved this album back in the day and it's full of great songs. You did justice to this one, your vocal performance is really, really good, lots of emotion shining through. Nice stripped back sound that works well. First take  is often the best take!

Great take of a classic! Sounds nice with man & uke - simple and beautiful!
