UP DATE VIDEO////////////////////////////////

Well, here's the explanation:
I was looking for a song (not too difficult) to use my beautiful Estey harmonium, made in Battleboro, Vermont around 1900

I bought it at a flea market for next to nothing.. and it works!
After a search on the internet I came across this song by Neil Young (a song I didn't know): Mother Earth
I was inspired by two live versions: first with only harmonium and harmonica (and choirs) and 2ndversion only with his guitar Les Paul Gibson-bigsby (very grunge)
when he performs on stage (I saw him in Lyon at the jazz festival in 2013) Neil Young has a harmonium that he uses for example in Like a Hurricane)

PS I left at the beginning the little dedication of NY to his mother (near 24' ) ;)

With this magnificent ode to the planet, Neil Young is defending one of the causes that mobilizes him the most: our way of depleting the planet's resources, of compromising our own chances of survival by not respecting nature and the people who live there.

thank guys for listening

That is a cool Neil Young cover JP! The harmonium looks and sounds beautiful and nostalgic. If I was there I would applaud and drop a couple of euros in the tip jar sitting on top of the harmonium.....nicely done!

Wow... that was powerful. Shame on me I do not know the original! But that was great JP... that Harmonium sounds massive... you didn't do too bad on that great guitar solo too! Oh, and fab vocals too. Great stuff JP.

Some additional explanations about this song
...given by my friend Jean Paul :

QuoteHi JP.

Congratulations on your acquisition (harmonium) and interpretation.

About the song, I didn't know it performed by Neil Young, but I knew it as "La balage irlandaise" performed by Renaud, a song for peace in Ireland ("I wanted to plant an orange tree, Là ou la chanson n'en verra jamais en...")

I suspected that for Renaud it was also a cover version and a little Google search gave me:

"The exact title is "the water is wide", at least for the modern version.
She is not of Irish origin, even if she is sung there. Probably Scottish or maybe English?
It was found in England and Scotland in the 1600s under the title "Oh waly waly", written in English with Scottish words.
We find her later with other words.
Then the song will appear in the United States, brought by American soldiers of the First World War, back home.
It has been performed by several artists, including Bob Dylan and Graeme Allwright in French."

Thank you Mr. Internet!

So indeed it is not a composition by Neil Young, (for the music ),but a huge folk standard...
the version I prefer after listening to the multitude of covers on YT is the version sung by James Taylor and so, I feel like making a guitar, vocals and Weissenborn version of this song ;)

What a great post, harmonium and guitar works really well. My Idol it's time for you to start writing your own songs, but this a very clever cover !

Getting to this one late...

Man, that harmonium sounds huge (and looks heavy)! I have a travel harmonium of Indian manufacture - the bellows is pumped by hand while you play notes with the other hand, but its lowest note is quite a bit higher than the notes you played on your harmonium. And the bellows on your harmonium is pumped by foot (feet), I suppose? Any idea of the age or manufacturer of the harmonium?

To the song: not a Neil Young song with which I'm familiar, but you captured the vibe. Big sound - well done!

yes Cuthbert my Harmonium is an ESTEY built in Brattleboro, Vermont around 1900 and bought at Hug and Co in Zurich

I do a little topic on the subject Harmonium French, German, American...and Indian in the board "general discussion"
I think you'll be interested.

I plan to do a version of Like a Hurricane...there are a few covers on SC,...but not with the harmonium

Is it possible to put this cover on Festival Neil Young 2...if it is this festival in Mar/Apr festival (if this the one chosen)?

No, sorry - we require that festival entries be recorded specifically for the festival. Since your cover of Mother Earth was posted several days before the festival choices were even posted for voting, it would not qualify for entry into Neil Young Fest 2.

If, on the other hand, you are actually asking about the cover of Like A Hurricane you were planning, then as long as it's being recorded for the NYFest 2, it will qualify for entry.
