TIP: Convert files using local disk backup instead of connecting via USB

Hello,

I thought I would share a tip that I discovered when working with the folders that I backed up from the BR.

If you connect via USB or card reader and pull the Roland and MP3 folders over to a folder on your local disk, you will have a good backup of your data from the BR, but what if you want to use the wave converter software on this backup?

The answer (on Windows) is to use the SUBST command.

From a command prompt, type:

subst <Driveletter> <folder path>

This will then create a drive letter whose root is the folder you specified.

Example: subst b: c:\microbr

You would then be able to convert files back and forth using the subst drive instead of the actual SD card.

If you all are aware of this, I apologize for the duplicate information.

Yes, that will work just fine for those who are comfortable with DOS. But there's a much easier way. Just download and install BR Explorer.

https://songcrafters.org/64guitars/BR/Software.html

You can select any BR drive or a backup folder on any drive and click the [WAV] button. BR Explorer will then transparently create a virtual drive if needed and launch the BR Wave Converter with the drive already selected. All you have to do is select the desired song from the drop-down Song list in BR Wave Converter, select the v-tracks you want to convert, and click the Export button.

You can also Backup and Restore from BR Explorer with the click of a button. And there are several other useful features.

I suggested the DOS subst technique back on August 9, 2005, the day that BR Wave Converter 2.0 was released.

But many BR users are not very computer literate, so I created a Windows program to execute the subst command transparently and launch the BR Wave Converter program. The program needed a directory browser so that users could easily select the backup folder they want to work with. And so BR Explorer was born. I added song details, backup/restore and other features and released the first version on Dec 21, 2005.

64,

I pulled it down earlier today and it is very cool.  I especially like the note fields for the track information, etc.

Thanks,

Bob

PS - Not so much a DOS head, but the commandline rules (even on XP, now that PowerShell is here!)
