I was never a huge fan of Tom Petty... or so I thought. His passing has hit me harder than it should have. But looking back, he's always been at or near the top of my musician lists. Best American Band, Influential Songwriter, American Songwriter, Favorite band, etc.,  I'm hoping there will be more Tom Petty covers for the mini festival, but even if there isn't, I wanted to do this.

Some days are diamonds
Some days are rocks
Some doors are open
Some roads are blocked

Sundowns are golden
Then fade away
And if I never do nothing
I'll get you back some day

'Cause you got a heart so big
It could crush this town
And I can't hold out forever
Even walls fall down

All around your island
There's a barricade
It keeps out the danger
It holds in the pain

Sometimes you're happy
Sometimes you cry
Part of me is ocean
Part of me is sky

'Cause you got a heart so big
It could crush this town
And I can't hold out forever
Even walls fall down

And some things are over
Some things go on
And party of me you carry
Part of me is gone

But you've got a heart so big
It could crush this town
And I can't hold on forever
Even walls fall down

You got a heart so big
It could crush this town
And I can't hold on forever
Even walls fall down
I can't hold on forever
Even walls fall down

Great tribute to a legend. I don't know the original track, but I really like this, love when you add the vocal harmony in the chorus. Good work and good to see the Tom Petty Fest got off the ground!

This is one Tom Petty song I haven't listened to very much. You have done a great job on it though and did good harmony. A fine tribute to a great singer/songwriter of our time. I have seen the documentary on Sylvia Massy and also Sound City where Tom Petty did a lot of recording. Sylvia is a great engineer/producer.

Such a simple and beautiful song – and well done. Yet I'm not sure I understand it.

And if I never do nothing
I'll get you back some day

Is that double negative intentional? So... If he does anything at all, he'll get her back. And he's kind of ambivalent about it?

Coming back some day

Can't hold on forever.

It's almost like he wants to take a break, and come back to revisit the relationship in a few years, see how he feels about it then? This guy is sending ambiguous messages. What do you think?

I missed out on the Tom Petty Mini Fest during this particular blackout – and this was the first song I listened to. A great introduction to the Fest. Looking forward to hearing the others.
