Super recording... jangly guitars sound great. Sweet tone from your Rickenbacker Cuthbert. Really well performed and put together. Enjoyed that.

As good as I could expect!

Really well performed and I like widely panned instruments! Rickenbacker gives really original flavor to this! Stunning version of a brilliant song!

Thanks for the info of the recording and effect patches, too!

QuoteBeyond Tambourine Man, Turn Turn Turn & Eight Miles High, I'm not too familiar withe The Byrds, but this is a gorgeous track.

so ADT or not?

Thanks for asking - you guys have keen ears. :)  I did use the Abbey Road Reel ADT plugin, but perhaps not where you'd expect it?

The Rickenbacker was manually triple-tracked (3 different takes, with mostly-right channel panning). No Reel ADT was used on these tracks, but the MBR SuperCln patch which I used when recording them has both chorus and delay, so there's definitely some signal modulation going on there. The backing vocals were manually double-tracked (2 different takes, panned opposite each other). I routed these into a stereo bus, and then added the Reel ADT plugin to it using the Vocal Rock Ghost patch.

For the lead vocal, instead of Reel ADT, I used the old 70s John Lennon vocal trick (originally done back in the day with tape machines, but updated for these modern digital audio editors): in Adobe Audition, I duplicated the single lead vocal track, panned it opposite, and then offset the audio clip to 90 ms later. To this delayed track, I added some high compression (18:1) and reverb with about 80% wet level, and set it about 8 dB lower than the original vocal track.

I used this same technique in my cover of Mind Games, for the Beatles "Black Album" Fest. This 70s Lennon Vocal Trick™ could also be done using Audacity, or any other digital audio editing software with compressor and reverb plugins.

Thanks again for listening, and the nice comments.

thank you Cuthbert for all technicals notes It's very interesting:
This is one of the main interests of SC and one should give more often the technical varieties of recordings ... for an amateur it is very useful and that is how I discovered the ADT..

Great cover. The jangle box sounds excellent with the Rick (a real Rick?! Don't see one of those everyday). Love the mixing as well, the harmonies are super well done. Byrdstacular!

first off I loved the history lesson here... I never knew that David Crosby was in that group.... and while I admit that my knowledge of the group is limited...but I have heard a number of their songs on the radio and indeed have some of their stuff on mp3 in my playlist...and I like them very much... but then again there isn't much that i don't....
I like you description of why you like this sort of music...well said...

excellent cover... could have used the vocals a tad louder but... it is good none the less...those guitar sounds are to die for.
