Hi all! I've been on a personal hiatus but it's time to jump back into the music making process.
My friend Bill T. and I had discussed the idea of doing a collaboration on a song. We had no preconceived thoughts of what style of music...we just knew a joint effort would be fun. I did have a lyric theme in mind of writing words that were built around fortune cookie sayings. Bill took it from there and put together a very entertaining story line and melody. Bill T did the lead vocal, I did the backing vocals and the rest of the music.

On the music: I did what I normally do when searching for a song idea. I started doodling on my acoustic until something surfaced. I recorded an acoustic demo of a semi-song structure and sent it to Bill. He added his vocal to it and we were on our way. I then moved to the studio and began the recording/production/mixing/mastering process.
I used a Fender Jaguar guitar into a Hotone Legacy 5 watt amp into a 2x10" speaker cab. I mic'ed it with a 1976 AKG 1000DE dynamic mic. The bass is a Fender Jazz direct. The drums are from a Zoom MRT3 machine.

This is the final result and my first song effort of 2017. We hope you like it!

Fortune Cookie Boogie

Lead intro

(V1) We left the gig, late one night, been smokin' weed, the band was starvin', in need of a bite.
Everything was closed, it was 4 a.m., just had to find some food for those hungry men.
When a greasy spoon came into view and we pulled into the lot of the Fu Man Chew.
Just one old China Man working there with greasy hair, a grimy face and we didn't care.
Placed our order, got unknown with rice, and a bowl of cookies complete with advice.

(V2) Cracked one open, it was dry as sand, said "success on the horizon", well I'll be damned.
Next one claimed, "folks are attracted" to me, things were lookin' up, so said the cookies.
I was down and out, strung out on dope, fortune cookies were the only thing that gave me hope.
The drummer said, they were ready to leave, wasn't my time to go, cookies were talkin' to me.
"Change can hurt, but leads to something better", the print's so small can hardly read the letters.

(Chr) Fortune cookies, settin' me straight, ancient Chinese secrets, things Confuscius might say.
Fortune cookies, lookin' out for me, makin' life better, I guarantee.
Fortune cookies, talkin' to me, along with indigestion, got advice that's free.
Fortune cookies, help you through life's struggles, a day at a time, that's the way the cookie crumbles.

(Solo break/bridge (wait for the turn)

(V3) On my way out, I got a bag of cookies to go, along with some shrimp chips for the bass player, Joe.
He was drunk, passed out in the back of the van, but I shook him awake, put a cookie in his hand.
He jammed that cookie in his mouth, the message was soggy, when we pulled it back out.
"Now is the time, to try something new", I said, see there Joe, there's a message for you.
Now that's a smart cookie and we can't wait, get your hand out the cookie jar before it's too late.

(Alternate chorus ending)

Do the fortune cookie boogie
Do the fortune cookie boogie
Have a fortune cookie, boogie down the road...Yeah....
