Solar Winds

I'm on a bit of a roll at the moment - I did this track in a day (normally I will take at least a week to get a tune written, recorded & mixed). The title isn't particularly significant... I find it hard to write music "about" any subject, so I didn't set out to write something about ionised particles emitted by the sun. A song with lyrics is easy to find a title for - the name will be in the lyrics. However for something as abstract as an instrumental, I get it finished and then think "OK what the hell am I going to call this?" I can't just call it Dicking Around With Modes (which is essentially all I was doing).

Anyway, when I added the synth sound, it made me think of space travel & sci-fi so I started thinking along those lines. Working titles included...

"Day Trip To Venus"
"Event Horizon"
"Mountains of Mars"

and

"The Black Obelisk" (a reference to 2001 - A Space Odyssey)

In the end I saw a Brian Cox show on TV where he was talking about the northern lights being caused by the solar winds & it just appealed to me. The usual cast of characters:

SI drums; Cakewalk "Triangle" synth plug-in; no-name bass; tele (rhythm guitar) HB Les Paul (lead & harmonies); HB acoustic and the Vox Tonelab.

Hope you like it :)

Holy Schmokes! This is pure guitar bliss. Your chops on this are amazing and I love how the the arrangement builds with your guitars singing a melody line and then those dual harmonizing leads sound fantastic. Switching gears with those wonderful Satriani licks then the acoustic really sets it up for the next part. Skillful, dynamic & brilliantly executed. Reminds me of the Satriani '89 - '92 music -  "Flying in a Blue Dream" & "The Extremist"

Hats off to Mr. Robson,

Dude, this is one he'll of a tune, not sure I cold ever classify it as dicking around but I like that title. Fabulously amazing playing, I love when it turns into the Who for a second or 2 with that Acoustic strumming then back to the crazyness and then the who is back!!!!
Rock on!

Brilliant stuff, Johnny. Scorching fluid lines, legato, tapping and harmonies.  Love it.

Excellent instrumental music! The intro with bass, drums and synth works nicely!

I like the variations of your guitar work and the acoustic guitar was brilliant idea at 3:15 and at intro!

Amazing job, Johnny!

Thanks chaps & thanks Mach for that comparison. I did worry that it was a little TOO Satriani-esque, but then I thought "What the hell, if Coldplay can get away with nicking Joe Satriani's tunes, then I don't need to worry!"

If it's any consolation, I don't believe your nicking, to me it's just an influence (as anyone has) and you can play that sort of style with great techniques and make it flow beautifully.

Yeah, this is a real thing of beauty........speaking of influences.......this reminds me sorta of something that Buckethead would come up with on one of his many many albums (the guy puts out like one a month or something crazy like that).  Seriously wonderful.
