Hey Folks,

Here is a song that I wrote a few nights ago when I was lying in bed unable to sleep because my son was coughing and spluttering in his bedroom up the hallway. He is 18. He knows best.

Anyway, it started out to be a song about his cold and then it turned into a brain teaser and a big whinge.

Don't worry, I don't really talk like this to sick people. These are my internal thoughts, shared with you but I am not very sympathetic at 3am.

Nocturnal Admonishments

Ian Robertson 27 November 2016

They say that nature will take its course
When I hear you coughing and spluttering
Its better if you know the cause
But I see you sitting there muttering

You're walking around the house
I can't get you to sleep
You don't take my advice
You just cough and sneeze

They say, the nature of King George
Was to hear him on the radio stuttering
The nature of a cricket ball
Is to get caught in the guttering

You're walking around the house
I can't get any peace
You're not very nice
Because you don't say please

They say, the nature of a butterfly
Is to drift around and do the fluttering
There are many things that I won't try
And that includes prostitution and huckstering

You walk around the house
You don't know how to creep
I've heard you do it twice
You're so hard to believe

They say, the nature of a good piece of toast
Is to not overdo the buttering
The things that I love the most
O-en tell me that I need decluttering

You walk around the house
You don't stop to speak
You haven't turned light off
For about two weeks

They say, the nature of a fraud or a cheat
Is to be good at deceiving and uttering
The thing to make this song complete
Is to find another rhyme for "uttering"

You walk around the house
I can hear your feet
I think we've paid the price
Its time to leave
Its time to leave
I'm going to sleep
I'm going to sleep
I'm going to sleep

Nice piece, Ian.  Most of my lyrics are written in the small hours in similar circumstances.

Good work with the rhyming, too.  For a long time I didn't think there was an upper limit to the amount of butter that a piece of toast would take; recently though I discovered that there is.  Who knew?

Hi Ian, love the minimalism and I have to say you really excelled yourself on the vocal and in particular the lyrics.
Top class post.    Willie

Fantastic song, Ian!

I like the vocal melody, it's beautiful and bombastic at same time. Piano and cello sounds always fine together! (If I could play piano, I'd use that method, too ;) )

Thanks for the sharing info about writing process :)

Loved it, from the "uttering" rhymes (btw, if you like it, I also like the word/concept of "puttering" - not sure if that's only an Americanism, though) to the minimalist arrangement, which helps keep the focus on the lyrics without distracting.

Nice one, Ian.
