John Lennon once said 'Before Elvis, there was nothing.'

But a few years before Elvis, in New Orleans just a ways down the Mississippi river from Memphis and Beale street, Rhythm and Blues was just bustin' to break out.

In 1952 Lloyd Price wrote and recorded 'Lawdy, Lawdy Ms. Clawdy'.  It holds the distinction of being the first 'teen record' to sell a million copies and was among the first (tho among many) of new recordings to feature the snare drum putting the emphasis on the 2nd and 4th beat.  Fats Domino played piano.

A couple of years after that Lloyd Price was drafted and spent a few years of involuntary service in the US Army in Korea.  During that time his fledgling record label back in New Orleans went looking for someone to fill the void and found a guy who called himself Little Richard.  And somehow Little Richard came up with the idea of a song called 'Good Golly Miss Molly'...

This recording was made during parts of the last 3 weekends.  The piano part was recorded in 3 takes (Nope, I can't do that with just 2 hands...).  Piano, alto sax, trumpet and upright bass were recorded using a MIDI keyboard and SampleTank 3 in Sonar Studio 3.  Drums were recorded using a SR-16 to drive Session Drummer for snare and kick and then cymbals and toms were added on separate tracks via the MIDI keyboard. The guitar is the good ole Epi Dot via the Roland Cube.  Vocals recorded along with 'vintage plate reverb' on a separate track.  Mixed in Sonar Studio 3 and mastered on the silver brick.

Thanks for listening.
Hail Rock n' Roll, and Rhythm and Blues!

These days I merely dabble at being old and wise.
But I swear, I used to absolutely excel at being young and stupid.

I know this song - great cover, hoop!

The New Orleans sound really made a huge contribution to Rock and Roll - between Lloyd Price, Fats Domino, Little Richard, Larry Williams and many others, a foundation for rock music was built. Including your version here, the last two I remember (from recent listening) were by Elvis Presley and Larry Williams.

Great stuff. On to another listen!

Oh I love a bit of 50s rock n roll - I probably know the Little Richard version.

This is great, I particularly like the vocal.

I was never much of a one for 50's music but I've become a big fan over the last couple of years and I attribute that to the fests on this brilliant community site.

I don't know this song but I thoroughly enjoyed hearing your version. And the ending is sweeeeeet

Great job

I was surprised to hear this, not your usual style at all, but the playing, recording and production are flawless, so it has to be a genuine Hooper.

It's great Ken, precise and clean.

And I hadn't knowingly heard this before, so this is my original version...
