a wee instrumental done on my ipad using garage band.  i played it's virtual acoustic guitar, virtual rock guitar, virtual violin and virtual viola. then recorded it all to my br800 for mastering. i have no idea how to master in garageband or transfer the tracks to my br800 other than via the line in, so any advice or hints are welcome. hope it's not too weird.

Cool soundsCape jim I'm all for the sounds in garage band but I steer away from the virtual guitars or only use them to sketch a song then add the real ones.
Same with the keyboards, l love the piano sounds.
It's a great tool to write with.

unfortunately kenny i don't have your technical abilities on the guitar. my mind works linear like a keyboard, so i can plug my korg nanokey into my ipad and play stuff on the keyboard that i couldn't play on the guitar.

with garage band i am actually seeing that as an instrument in itself another colour for the paintbox if you like, but i agree with you that it is first and foremost a great writing tool.  i have a work in progress with blooby where i worked out the guitar parts in garage band, but played them on my real guitar. tho the garage band version is much more accomplished than me. lol.

Very cool soundscape my brother...BRAW even.
I have to politely disagree about the ipad. While I have written on it and do like the tunes I've written with it, I see it more as an instrument. I usually plug in sraight into my recorder. It's all my synths, strings, sound effects and a good portion of my drums. I used to do all my horns and still do some but I have the EWI now too. Since I can't shred I've used thumbjams electric guitar to stellar effect and TJs trombone is to die for.
I did, inspired by you, record a piece on the ipad the other day but have not tried to get it off yet. I don't have much desire to record on it but I love recording with it.
Again brother, cool sounds cape her.
Rock on!

that's pretty much what i've been doing too hook, this piece was all done in garage band as i didn't have access to my br800 at the time.

i would love to figure out how to transfer the individual tracks to my br800 to mess about with them in that.

and i will need to get thumb jam too.

I like using virtual instruments, but it's tough to make them sound realistic...sometimes it takes a lot of work adjusting the sounds (midi grid) unless your Jordan Rudess on keys. This has a cool and unique soundscape Jim. You have many layers going on to create a certain vibe. It came out really well.

I don't have garage band, but I do use Kontakt (great virtual sounds with real multi-velocity layers) in Pro Tools and you can then render the sounds to .wav format for further editing. I'm not sure how you would get them out of GB on to your recorder. What audio format does it support?

i have no idea what audio format it supports, i don't even know where the files are stored on my ipad. i have much still to learn.

'As to virtual instruments I guess i'm old school.  But I think the reason I prefer a real guitar and real drums is that I enjoy playing them.  Even if I could make a better sounding guitar on the iPad, I wouldn't because I'd miss out on the fun.  However, if there is a virtual horn player on something other than a keyboard, something that I could produce a true glissando effect for wind instruments and orchestral strings, please let me know.

I have no idea how to produce a soundscape like you have done here, but I like it!  This one is a unique, cascading, lovely vibe.  Very well done, Jim.

I was reading an article the other day: Top Fifty Ambient Albums of All Time. For all that it omitted some of my favourites (such as Tangerine Dream's Phaedra) it's a good list. But now I think there's one missing.

You could record an entire double album in this style and it would be sensational. This one track on its own is sensational. Very pleasant listening indeed.

And it ends nicely (I have a thing about endings). I'm looking forward to the next one. Until then I'll keep playing this one.
