My mandolin actually.  It's a 75 year old Kalamazoo.  Thanks muchly for the kind words.

BTW-  I tried to bring the vocal up by EQing and had little success.  i had best success by boosting 5Khz with a narrow band.  Anyone have a tip on boosting vocals when there is guitar on the same track?

Yeah a good ol jam session there and really does sound like a fun / spontaneous session. Great stuff! Mandolin is lovely in there too.

My suggestion at boosting the vocal - and I would only try this if you are desperate and nobody else chips in as I have no clue about mixing really - would be this...

Maybe duplicate the track - and then eq it so the vocals are boosted the way you want and at the same time eq the guitar out as much as you can too. It wont matter about the guitar as it will be heard in all its glory on the original track, but when you play the two tracks together, one with the vocal boosted, you should have a louder vocal??

Great sounding spontaneous jam. I wouldn't worry too much about the slightly off-kilter levels as it just adds to the home-spun, rootsy vibe you chaps are creating with this. Love the chatter at the beginning  :)

I think you might have something there Mike.  I was concentrating on boosting the vocal and I was just guessing where I should boost.  But i should also look at cutting the instruments.  Both can result in the desired effect, but because there is time where there is no vocal, the instruments can be studied so I will Know where to cut.  Thanks for addressing the question.

And thanks everyone for your kind comments.

Perfect description of what can happen in area 51 in New Mexico!

Loved it! I really dig the loose acoustic performance - it would fit right in on The Basement Tapes.

I'd echo duplicating the track and lift the vocals on one and the instruments on another. If you push one to the Right channel, and one to the Left, you'll get better separation as well.
