he got into his motor car
drove n drove don't know how far
and then he turned his headlights off
to see the stars
he lay down on the cold cold ground
not another soul around
he looked right up into the sky
to see the stars
and out beyond the milky way
he wondered if there was a place
a place where he could go one day
to see the stars
he went out to his garden shed
wrote down the stuff inside his head
he knew he had to find a way
to see the stars
he put it all down in a book
his friends came round to have a look
and then they turned the lights all off
to see the stars
and out beyond the milky way
they wondered if there was a place
a place where they could go one day
to see the stars

This is a classic song. It's like an Italian espresso: short, full strength and perfectly balanced.

Recording a cover of this song appeals, except I fear my attempt would be over-produced and miss the relaxed authenticity of the original.

Great stuff. Truly outstanding. Straight on the playlist.
Dueling BR1600s. Beats banjos.

Great capsule story telling, Jim.  You're a poet.

For some reason I was put in mind of Cowboy Junkies.  But I know it's not about that.
