BR80 deleting a SMF

Hi

I have managed to import SMF files with odd meters :)

But how do I remove a SMF  from the BR80 ?

There are no information on this in the manual :(

I don't think there's any way to delete midi files directly from within the BR-80. Instead, you need to connect the BR-80 to your computer and delete the midi file from the /ROLAND/SMF folder of the BR-80's memory card using your operating system's file manager.

Hi 64Guitars

I did just that but the imported SMF files are still accessible on the BR80 !
If I go to the same place (MTR mode / Rhythm / Select the SMF / Enter) ( above the import option ) where you import SMF there is an option to delete but if I press it, it just displays "Cannot Delete"

Okay. I think there's some confusion between the MIDI file and the pattern into which you import it. I thought you just wanted to delete the SMF file but now I think you're talking about the pattern that you've imported the file into. The instructions for deleting a pattern are on page 71 of the BR-80 manual. If you follow those instructions and get the error message "Cannot Delete!", it's probably because your Rhythm Progression only has one step. You're not allowed to delete the only step of a progression because every progression must have at least one step. So, to delete the pattern, first add a second step to the progression (any pattern will do). Then delete the first step.

Alternatively, if your progression only has one step, you can just initialize the progression. Instructions for doing that are on page 71 too. This procedure erases all of the steps in the progression. So, if you have more than one step, you probably don't want to do that. But then, if you had more than one step, you wouldn't be getting the "Cannot Delete!" message, so you could just delete the unwanted pattern instead.

Sorry for the lack of clarity but I meant the SMF's that I have imported !
The only way so far is to format the card ?
But that is a no no once you get some recordings on the card.

That Delete option deletes the currently-selected pattern from the rhythm progression. It doesn't delete any files. However, it only works if the rhythm progression has two or more patterns in it. Otherwise, you'll get the error "Cannot Delete!". See page 125 of the BR-80 manual.

No, you don't have to format the card. As I said, we're talking about two separate things. There's the Standard MIDI File that you copy into the /ROLAND/SMF directory of your BR-80's memory card. And there's the pattern into which you import the data from that Standard MIDI File. To delete the file, you need to connect your BR-80 to a computer and use your operating system's file manager. But that doesn't affect the pattern, which will still play even though the SMF is gone. To delete the pattern, you must first select it (if the progression has more than one pattern), then use the Delete option described on page 71, or initialize the progression which is described on the same page.

Hi 64Guitars

Thanks and sorry for the confusion

I have not got used to BOSS's terminology yet but I think I know what you mean and will try it at some time during the day.

Cheers

I've been thinking about this and I've realized that the Delete option I mentioned earlier only deletes a step from the progression. It doesn't delete the data from the custom pattern. There doesn't seem to be any convenient way to do that. The only thing I can think of is to make an empty midi file on your computer and import that empty SMF to the same pattern containing the data you imported from a SMF earlier, overwriting that data with the empty pattern.

Actually though, it's probably more trouble than it's worth. I think I would just leave the custom pattern on the BR-80 and delete the step from the progression instead. As long as the unwanted pattern isn't playing, it's doing no harm by being on the BR-80. I suspect that any space it takes up is pre-allocated anyway, so nothing is gained by deleting the pattern. And, if you later decide to import another SMF into your song, you can specify the same destination pattern as the unwanted one so that the new SMF replaces the old one.

Hi 64Guitars

I removed the files via USB and then I erased the song and then the SMF files are gone.

Thanks for your input !

Time to get creative !
