Back to Robert Johnson...I havent had a chance to watch the videos in this topic(yet) but I did read through the topic.
I want to be careful of what I say though, so please dont take offense.
But I dont get Robert Johnson...and its not without trying, the legend draws you in, over and over again...all blues leads back to him.
Maybe its the era of recording? The off tempo, off pitch of the old recorders...playback is faster than the actual live performance. Everything about it is like nails on a chalkboard to me...its like a treble-y mess...and Im reminded why I like NEW STRINGS.
At some point I heard some of the newer remastered RJ recordings, that were at the correct speed and pitch...still didnt do much for me.

BUT the songs are great, I love to hear a Robert Johnson cover...weather its the Stones, Clapton or whoever. I find him to be not unlike Bob Dylan...love the songs, loath the original.
FWIW, there are several "greats" that I just dont get, that I know I should...for some reason they just dont move me.
And lastly, I dont totally fault RJ...the blues from that era is just too early for my tastes, its the generation after that I really appreciate. Muddy, the Wolf, the Three Kings...
If you like Robert Johnson...I highly recommend his step son...Robert Jr(Robert Lockwood Jr) he did alot of RJ's songs and very well...all on a 12 string.

Right, after the previous contretemps wherein continental-European floozies were trying to invade this Bob-Fest, we'll try again. Here's an approximation of R.J's recording technique, which seems to support the 'for-the-acoustics' theory.
