So when 64 bumped Geir's version of this song, I had finished the drums and was working on the bass.  I will admit I had a crisis of confidence - I was going for a straight cover and I knew it couldn't match up to Geir's.

Then last Friday I was recording the guitar parts and I wasn't feeling it at all.  I was this close to binning the whole project.  I stopped recording.  Later that night I went back to what I'd recorded and relented.  Then I had to piece together the second half of the (rhythm) guitar track from what I already had.

Then I added a bassoon part (tribute to the Richmond Trio) and a little flute.  Then we are where we are...

Glad you didn't give up on this - I thoroughly enjoyed listening!

Great guitar and you captured the bridge transition very well, as well as adding an interesting choice of extra instruments to it.

Yes indeed, so glad you kept at this Nick. What a job you have done putting this together... it all fits together superb. Fab singing - that couldn't have been easy - and great Bassoon and flute additions to give that great flavour.

It's a great track... I had a little think about trying this one myself, but I elected to pass on it as it seemed too much for me, so fair play (and Geir too!)!! I do love this song though, as it encompasses that great, slightly eccentric Britishness.

Big thumbs up :) :)

Havne't heard this song in ages. The Kinks were one of my first concerts (my 3rd I think), and this brought back some wide-eyed memories. I think part of my hearing damage came from that night. Friggin' loud show.

Loving the bass here. I don't think I could've pulled that off so cleanly.Really enjoyed this.

Thanks everyone for the comments.  Some production notes;

The drums were programmed on DM-1 drum machine, initially on a kit I don't use much but then reverted back to King, which is the one I've used for my jazz stuff.

The bass is GB P-Bass, which sounded horrible on its own but goes alright in the mix.

Guitar parts (2) are with my Tokai Breezysound, through my Apogee Jam into GarageBand amp sims (Sunshine Drive and Surf)

Keyboard is GB 'Whirly'

Bassoon and Flute also GB.

Vocal is recorded with the iPhone (5) onboard mic.  I sing in front of the clothes in an open wardrobe to kill reflections.

Quote from: kenny mac on July 28, 2016, 05:26:16 AMThis suits your vocal well.

I'm not so sure.  Having finished the track I then had to face up the vocal knowing that it was either too high for me or too low, depending where I pitched it.  I went for the high option but those high ("toooor...") are out of my reach and I just wobble and croak through them.

After my crisis of confidence with the track I looked at the song on Wikipedia and found there is a version by the Fall and when I looked that song is on my iPod (the original isn't).  That gave me a new direction with it and saw me through.  Thanks Mark E Smith.

I dig it brother, and your vocal sounds real good to me. I want a little more of that crunchy rhythm guitar and I might pull your vocal back into the mix. just kind of beef that all up as a solid unit, but it's a good cover brother.
 Rock on!
