I've been digging the hell out of Tedeschi Trucks Band playing this Derek & the Dominos' tune, "Keep on Growing". The lyrics are kind of nonsense, but the major chord bounce always puts a smile on anyone's face. I can't sing it quite like Susan Tedeschi and Mike Mattison (or even Bobby Whitlock and Eric Clapton), but I figured it would be even happier on acoustics.

Great cover. Love that acoustic slide. Sounds so good. Are you using glass?

Just passed on TTB in Atlanta and am already kicking myself over it (especially after The Colonel and Jimmy Herring sat in). Just too much driving this summer. By the way, did you see the recent Oteil article where he said Gregg was texting the core members to try and get together for Wanee next year? I'm just hoping Jack Pearson will be on the grounds in some fashion again.

I have been eyeing some resonator guitars but don't want to break the bank. I've tried a couple Recording Kings, but I either didn't like the way they played or they were just set up poorly. Can you recommend any?

Peace.

Thanks, Blooby! I use glass for electric slide and brass for acoustic slide. I find you get more resonance and noise out of brass on higher gauge nickel strings on acoustic. Glass on acoustic deadens the string quicker, it always sounds like people using glass slides on acoustic are working harder, which works if you're doing some biscuit cone banging Son House-type stuff. I find glass is smoother and easier to control on electric with lighter gauge strings since it's so much lighter.

I hear ya, I'm a little spoiled being in NYC with TTB, Gregg, Butch, and even Jaimoe, etc, regularly in the area, often for multiple shows. I saw that about Oteil, not sure how I feel about them getting back together. That last show was pretty epic, but I certainly would be there if they got back for Wanee. Les Brers at Wanee essentially was the Allman Brothers with Butch, Jaimoe, Oteil, Jack, Lamar, and Warren sitting in. I really wish I got to see Jack Pearson play more often.

I really like my Recording King for the price (used $375 from Elderly Music). I like the narrow neck and high action for a round neck, it works well for me and sounds well enough. Most Chinese-made resonators will need some nips and tucks to their setup. And I once had a Regal, about the same price, and I returned it. Total junk. Beards are kind of the gold standard for wood spider cones, but I've read a lot of people like Appalachians, however, they are still expensive ($1300 compared to $2000-$4000 for a Beard). I'd play a bunch, see what you like, and keep an eye on Elderly, reverb or other instrument dealers. You never know what you might find. Also, folks at resohangout.com might be able to offer more insight than I can http://www.resohangout.com/gotoforum/30

Nice one. Kind of a hard song to pull off well acoustically I would think, but you've certainly done it justice.  The slide riff is really infectious.
I had nearly forgotten this one and how good it is, and the entire record really . Loads of great songs and a great band... Clapton might as well have retired there and then ;)
