I had an Oud lesson on Thursday and my teacher gave me the music for this demonic music. I pushed my micro-recorder in his face and asked him to do me a drum track too. So, here's my best effort to create this sound of 'maqam Saba' - the most alien sound there is to western ears - I think 'Bad Ass' is the rock equivalent.

If the human brain was simple enough for us to understand, we'd be so simple, we couldn't...

Superb & eerie! I love exotic scales like this... I try messing about with things like the "Neapolitan Minor Scale" & the "Hungarian Gypsy Scale every now & then. I can usually do a melody OK, but when it comes to an improvised lead break, I'm up sh*t creek without a paddle! There's no sense that you're out of your comfort zone here though. You really sound like you're in the groove 100%. Brilliant work, mate!

How cool that you are taking oud lessons. There's a load of cool inflections here that I assume are from it being fretless. Your intonation is fantastic, by the way. Love the melodies and the recording.

This is so cool.  Absolutely brilliant - and what a marvelous instrument to learn.  The scales are a bit unfamiliar to western ears but personally I love it.

Please post more when you are ready.

This is right up my street, and you sound very much at home with this exotic instrument and scale. Sounds like a Led Zep kind of melody to me - very heavy and epic.

Bloody brilliant!
