I wanted to do at least one double-fester for this round of festivals, so I rounded up an old Marantz portable cassette recorder I bought for cheap on eBay a few years ago for recording musical snippets, and did this one live in the living room using the recorder's on-board mic.

I chose this song because it was one of the last songs that Buddy Holly recorded live in his apartment in NYC on a reel-to-reel recorder. Shortly after this, he embarked on his fateful Winter Dance Party tour.

Buddy Holly

It's not the cleanest recording I've ever made (there's some audible motor hum that was recorded), but I was surprised by the frequency response considering it's a 70s portable cassette recorder.

Thanks for listening,
cuthbert

To be recorded on cassette, this sounds very good! Fantastic voice and really well played!

Ps. I knew this tune but didn't know that it was written by Buddy Holly...

Great job cuthbert. For a mono recording, it sounds really good. I think it's probably because it has more dynamic range than most mono recordings. And the mix is good too, which is no easy thing when recording live with no opportunity for remixing. The TV Pal ukulele sounds great considering it's made of plastic. And I think it's cool that it's a fifties vintage instrument. Perfect for Fifties Fest!

I searched Google Images for pics of the Marantz PMD-221 and it looks pretty cool. I was surprised to find that it has an RJ-11 telephone input! I've never seen that on a recorder before.

Hook

Man that's a great recording, hardly any hiss and such already crisp sound. Well done brother. I really dig the sound of the uke, and like 64, I love that it's from the 50. Nice cover of one of my favs.
Rock on!

I am a a fan of the hiss on this recording. It immediately gives an old school vibe that you'd have to go way out of your way to do with today's signal paths. Understandably so, but it works like a charm here. Liking the understatedness of this. Enjoyed the singing as well.

Intimate and authentic.  50's vintage song made with 50's vintage uke recorded onto 70's vintage cassette.  Yum.
