You guys are awesome. Using that tape deck sucked so bad I think I'm done.

I'm still waiting for some analogue gold, by the new rules Bruno's tune is just that! https://songcrafters.org/community/index.php?topic=25197.0

Still not very inclusive is it - 10 people voted for it so I guess it's Fest On for the Old Skool 10.

Oh, I don't know about that, Hillary. :)

For instance, some people might find it easier to borrow/buy a cheap tape recorder to record a song for this fest than to like or appreciate a genre or artist enough to enter a song for a fest for which they didn't vote. So I really don't see how the OldSchoolStudio Fest is a special case that's somehow "not very inclusive".

Brother, I feel your pain :-) I had to balance weights on the head out out socket as the left channel kept cutting out, and the in/out switches are dodgy as well, so a recording would mysteriously go all crackly for a few seconds, and then be fine. And the first cassette, I'll have to post the recording for comedy value, the speed kept changing, sometimes fast, sometime slow, all of the time wobbly. I've discovered a new guitar effect. Every playback was different. I was close to throwing out of the window :-) I will try a more traditional recording though. I did have to read the manual to work out what the hell I was doing with this tho. I acquired the 4 track years ago, and never really got to grips with it, so put it in the loft, and forgot about it - till this fest :-)

Yes I looked into it, it was going to cost me £40 for a recorder and a converter just to participate in the Fest. I'm not paying it ergo I'm excluded.

Well Hilary, I see that more as excluding yourself from the festival because you've determined that it's too expensive for you to participate; that doesn't make the festival itself not inclusive. Many people still have an old cassette recorder lying around the house somewhere, or know someone who has one that they can borrow temporarily. For what it's worth, new cassette recorders can still be found in the £15-18 range from amazon.co.uk:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=cassette+recorder

But the more importantly, Songcrafter members vote for their festival choices every two months. OldSchoolStudio Fest won the popular vote in the Originals category this time around. Not everyone enters songs for every festival for a variety of different reasons, and this festival is no different from any other in that respect. It's fully inclusive - if you choose to participate.

Not sure that anyone here needs a converter, we've all got digital recorders, audio out to audio in - should be just a cable. Just use the digital to capture the final thing, to get it into the digital domain.  Could even record the audio out with a mike if your haven't got a headphone socket???? All you need is a cheap tape recorder. The cassettes are bloody expensive now tho. £5 for a single Chrome tape. I'm sure they used to be a farthing or a groat each, or something like that ...

Mind you, I had a misspent  youth playing with cassette recorders - I had two when I was a teen (from a junk shop) and bounced using the speaker playback whilst playing along - to get the multi-tracks. I could repeat many times to build up the track, until there was way to much hiss. This is a trip down that madness for me - and this fest makes me smile, 'cos its so familiar to me. Necessity is the mother of invention.

I always think these fests are a bit of additional fun, sometimes as a kick starter to get you going again. Plenty to choose from, so little time ..... and oh, so lazy (I spent the night watching x-files when I could be recording :-) ) ....

I appreciate that it's the Fest members have voted for and that's fair enough - I really hope all those that voted participate. I think I'll leave it there.
