This one is for chunk!!!

 :D

Even if its structure is not the usual one, in my opinion Goodbye Pork Pie Hat has in itself the real essence of blues.

It was composed by Charles Mingus in 1959 as a tribute to Lester Young.

Technical stuff:

electric piano-bass-drums: BIAB backing tracks

guitar: Yamaha SA2200

brass: Chris Hein Brass Kontakt library, driven as usual by a Godin Freeway SA through a Fishman TriplePlay.

Enjoy!

I first encountered this tune via the Jeff Beck version, then I discovered the "Mingus Ah Um" album & heard the original. Your version is as good as it gets!!! Your guitar tone... your chord voicings... your midi programming... and of course, your performance: it's all absolutely stellar! I'm sorry if I'm gushing, but this is just so bloody good!!!

If you're open to requests, may I suggest "Self Portrait In Three Colours" from the same album?

Bravo, mate!!!

Thanks Alfredo, this is one one of my all time favourite tunes and you have done a great job of it. Grazie tante.

Hook

Mind blowing to me that this was made in a studio similar to mine, the one I never used not the car one, and by a peer of sorts (I know your Doctor & I'm a clown...apples & oranges...or maybe apples & scrapple...). Regardless, really brilliant work, if I were just randomly hearing it I don't think I would have doubted it's authenticity. I know BIAB is real sounds but you know what I mean, you really gave it soul & your playing is marvelous.
Rock on!

Proper brilliant stuff, I'm enjoying this immensely.   Haven't come across the original, intend to put that right after hearing this.

Gorgeous.

Jazz on, dudes!

An immense THANK YOU to you all, you are all so gentle...

I have to add...

...strangely I too, as Johnny, discovered this tune via a cover, in my youth days: it was by Pentangle, and in my version there are obvious influences by THAT cover in particular.

I add also that one of the most beautiful covers was made by the strange couple Joni Mitchell/Jaco Pastorius, with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Peter Erskine...splendid over any word, IMO.

Dear Hook...a clown quite often heels people the same as I do, even if in different way, and anyway I too sometimes, during my everyday job, act as a clown...it helps...sometimes it helps a lot...  ;)

Dear Johnny...your words, by a GREAT guitarist like you, WOW! You have all my respect, my friend!  :)

Back for a listen on headphones rather than laptop speakers.

It's a beautiful thing, to be sure.  Love it when the guitar comes in with the trumpet melody towards the end.
